I have gone through the PA charts including the Prog Related and Proto-Prog charts and have listed the top three albums per category when only including one album by band (the top ranked album). If I just went with the top three then I would in various cases have more than one album, or even all three albums, by one band. I wanted more variety, so I then moved to the next highest ranked album by a different band when that happened.

I ask you to choose an option representing a category and consider all three albums listed when voting. While I expect the Symph choices to get the most votes, it is not a contest.

Here is the list that may be easier for some of you to refer to..

Canterbury Scene: Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink / Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom / Gong - You
Crossover Prog: Supertramp - Crime of the Century / Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn / Steven Wilson - The Raven that Refused to Sing
Eclectic Prog: King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King / Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff / Gentle Giant - In a Glass House
Experimental/Post Metal: Tool - Lateralus / Maudlin of the Well - Part the Second / Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape
Heavy Prog: Rush - Moving Pictures / Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet / Haken - The Mountain
Indo-Prog/Raga Rock: Andre Fertier's Clivage - Mixtus Orbis / Shakti with John McLaughlin - Natural Elements / Codona - Codona 3
Jazz Rock/Fusion: Miles Davis - Kind of Blue / Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire / Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior
Krautrock: Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra / Dom - Edge of Time / Ash Ra Tempel S/T
Neo-Prog: Marillion - Misplaced Childhood / IQ - The Road of Bones / Arena - Contagion
Post Rock/Math Rock: Bohren & der Club of Gore - Sunset Mission / Swans - Children of God / Magyar Posse - Random Avenger
Prog Folk: Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick / Harmonium - Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison / Los Jaivas - Alturas de Machu Picchu
Progressive Electronic: Klaus Schulze Mirage / Tangerine Dream - Rubycon / Alio Die - Deconsecrated and Pure
Progressive Metal: Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 2 - Scenes from a Memory / Riverside - Second Life Syndrome / Queensrÿche - Operation: Mindcrime
Psychedelic/Space Rock: Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here / Eloy - Ocean / Hypnos 69 - Legacy
RIO/Avant-Prog: Frank Zappa - Hot Rats / Art Zoyd - Häxan / Cardiacs - On Land and in the Sea
Rock Progressivo Italiano: Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) - Per un amico / Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (BdMS) - Darwin! / Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra
Symphonic Prog: Yes - Close to the Edge / Genesis - Selling England by the Pound / Camel - Mirage
Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: Gorguts - Obscura / Opeth - Still Life / Death - Symbolic
Zeuhl: Magma - Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh (MDK) / Eskaton - 4 visions / Dün - Eros
Various Genres/Artists: Jesus Christ Superstar / Odyssey - The Greatest Tale / La Biblia
Prog Related: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV / David Bowie - Blackstar / Queen - Queen II
Proto-Prog: The Beatles - Abbey Road / The Who - Quadrophenia / Deep Purple - In Rock

Ultimately for me it's between the Krautrock trio and the Zeuhl trio, and I will give it to Zeuhl. Also very much like the Canterbury Scene choices (most especially Rock Bottom and You), the RIO/ Avant Prog ones, the RPI choices, Clivage and Codona I particularly love from the Indo Prog/ Raga Rock album trio, and I so love Klaus Schulze's Mirage and like Rubycon very much (I have heard the Alio Die album but forgotten it). I love the bands in Eclectic, but none of those would be my album picks, and none would be in my top three albums of each band. I'd go Pawn Hearts, Lizard, and Acquiring the Taste.
Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

A not predictable vote from me for the trio of Supertramp (although I very slightly prefer Breakfast In America), Oldfield and Wilson. All are 5 star albums in my book. (I didn't vote for Camel, Genesis and Yes mainly because SEBTP is hugely overrated in my book, but I am alone in that opinion I expect!)

Yes, Genesis, Camel...

It's between these three... actually I think I placed them in th correct order.

Canterbury Scene: Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink / Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom / Gong - You
Magma MDK / Eskaton 4 visions / Dün Eros
Popol Vuh Hosianna Mantra/ Dom Edge of Time/Ash Ra Tempel ST

Interestingly jazz rock fusion has to be my all round favorite genre considering the amount of albums in my collection. But to me, in this poll, on of the least appealing trio of albums.

Initially, I thought I would go for the symph trio, but I'm not that an unconditional fan of SEBTP either. Most of these trios have at least one album that I'm less fond of. The trio of albums that convince me most here are Eclectic prog, RIO/Avant-Prog and Prog Related... I'll go with the first of these three.

Interesting poll in that no trio of three satisfies completely--there's always one of each three that irks me. The trio that comes closest to evoking enthusiasm is the J/R Fusion one, followed by the Indo-Prog/Raga (this despite the fact that I don't believe Kind of Blue belongs here on PA).

This is brutal, how can I vote for a RIO Trio without Henry Cow or Univers Zero? How can I vote for Canterbury without Hatfield or National Health?

Zeuhl, RPI & Krautrock all have 2 out of 3 for me so have personal gaps.

Went with the very strong Eclectic Trio all personal favorites.

This is really tough, as there are pretty much no options where I love every album. The genres I might expect to go for simply don’t relate well to what I like from those genres.  If I go through it then:

Canterbury - I like the Wyatt and Gong, but have never been a great fan of that Caravan album.

Crossover - None of these albums really does much for me, though I don’t dislike any of them.

Eclectic - Three great bands, but apart from Krimson, these are not the albums I’d go for.

Exp/Post - This is the leading contender so far, just edging out Eclectic.

Heavy - Haken have never really appealed to me, and though I like the other two bands, these are not albums that I particularly like.

Indo/Raga - I have not listened to any of these three albums.

Jazz/Fusion - I like all three artists here, but apart from Mahavishnu, these aren’t the most appealing albums for me.

Krautrock - And a similar situation here, although it’s more tempting, and a more likely contender for my vote.

Neo - Just, no.

Post/Math - Another tempting proposition, but not quite edging out Exp/Post which is still out in front for my vote.

Folk - I’ve never really enjoyed that Harmonium album.

Electronic - Another strong contender. Possibly beats Post/Math, and maybe even Exp/Post

Prog Metal - Only the Riverside album is a particularly favourite of mine, though I do like all three bands. Not even close to being a contender.

Psych/Space - I like all three of these albums, and WYWH is absolutely my favourite Floyd. But I still like other albums in other genres more. This would be one of the chasing pack, but it’s not out in front.

RIO/Avant - Oh, it’s so good. I like them all - but like Ian, it’s not the selection I’d go for. It’s tempting, though.

RPI - I like all three of these, too - but there are still albums I like far more in the other genres. So even though this is a 3 from 3, it isn’t as strong as some of the 2 from 3 genres.

Symphonic - This is an easy no, because even though I like all three groups, and all three albums, only Mirage is a favourite of mine.

Tech/Extreme - I haven’t listened to any of these (which no doubt is more evidence for some that I shouldn’t be on the prog metal team). I do like all the Opeth albums I’ve heard, and I own them all, too, but somehow I’ve not yet listened to anything from Still Life and before that.

Zeuhl - So far, I think this is the only real competition for Exp/Post. Definite contender for my vote!

Prog Related - Honestly, were it not for Led Zep, this would probably get my vote. Bowie is my favourite artist ever, and Blackstar is my favourite Bowie album. Likewise, Queen II is my favourite Queen album, and I’ve loved it for years upon years upon years. It’s so tempting to vote for this option, in sprite of Led Zep’s presence. But that would be defeating the point of the poll, and I do have to take all three albums into account. (Still so tempting, though…)

Proto Prog - After Neo, this is the next easiest no for me. I like the Beatles, don’t mind Deep Purple, and don’t really like The Who. There’s just nothing here that grabs me, that I would choose over so many of the other albums in this poll.

Ultimately, it comes down to Exp/Post and Zeuhl, and I’m not sure I can choose between them, without (eg) flipping a coin.
