As has been specified, Judas Priest's 'Prelude/Tyrant' is very progressive, but I think anything from their masterpiece 'Sad Wings Of Destiny' would fit the bill- particularly the two part 'Dreamer Deceiver' and 'Epitaph' which sounds similar to Peter Hammill, at times.

'Sad Wings Of Destiny' is my favourite metal album of all time as well, as it presented something new in the genre, a more complex type of metal than had been previously presented.

Judas Priest sucks more than any other band ever. Rob Halford sucks. Worst guitarist ever. bass sucks. Worst drums.

No Quarter - Led Zeppelin

Most prog song by a non prog band

Yep...though i may never know completely, for I can't stand to listen to them for more than the time it takes me to listen to "breaking the law" on the radio (which isn't horrible, but not good)

The Police were never a prog band. I'm pretty sure no one will dispute this too much. But many of the songs from one of there best albums Ghost in the Machine are prog, or at least have many prog elements. Examples: "Spirits in the Material World" "Invisible Sun" and "Secret Journey"

Yes! Smile is prog in disguise. The whole album consists of multi-movement suites. 4 in a row. GREAT album!

Let's add Fly to the rainbow (which ending part is nearly perfectly mimicked by the sung part of Magnum Opus by Kansas)

Friday evening I had a chat with a friend of mine, which brought one thing to my mind.

A very spread and enojyed genre in Italy is what is called "rock demenziale" (demential rock): usually, bands which follow that course don't mind very much about musical skill, the focal point being funny (and usually gross) lyrics.
There is but one outstanding exception: a group named Elio e le Storie Tese ("Elio and the troublesome stories" would be a quasi-fitting translation).
Man, they do know how to play and compose!
They can span from ballroom music to hard rock, from operatic mimicking to chançonnier ballads at the wink of an eye...
And they do have progressive skills, albeit with absurd arrangements and weird lyrics...songs like Supergiovane ("Superyoungster"), La vendetta del Fantasma Formaggino ("The revenge of the Cottage-cheese Ghost"), Il Rock ("Rock") and Pagano ("Heathen", this last one being played with Mauro Pagani, former PFM bandmember - there goes the pun, being "pagani" the plural form of "pagano" ) are rhythm-shifting, shimmering solo, and twisted signature and tempo changing perfect showcases!

I call for support from italian posters...isn't it true?
A flower?

I'd listen to Dark - Darkside.Judas Priest definately listened to this song I think.K K Downing considers himself as a progressive guitarist - I read somewhere.

As for Diamond Head being the pioneers of Progressive Metal couldn't this really be given to the Priest.Diamond Head were really a fusion between Black Sabbath/Led Zep. Perhaps a little bit of Judas Priest was in there as well.

White Spirit (Deep Purple/Yes influences) - I would consider them Prog Rock.Jannick Gers(Ian Gillan etc.) was actually a big Steve Howe fan.I can remember he done a Steve Howe acoustic set( got cut short because fans starting booing - in support of Ian Gillan in fact).

There were a few other NWOBHM that had Prog influences - much more so than Diamond Head(I actually own a copy of the White Album)

Incubus - Just a Phase - sounds sort of Prog to me.

Mercury Rev - have strong Prog influences.Vocalist spoils sound.

Tori Amos - Definate prog influences - Her piano playing is described as being prog styled.

Tony Chids - Peter Gabriel influences give her quite a Progish sound. At her best must be regarded as one of the best female vocalists - very, very underated.

Dj Shadow,Future Sound of London,Plaid etc - could be considered as Progressive Electronic(genre of Prog) at times.

McCoy Tyner - Is worth a listen if you are a Keith Emerson,Rick Wakeman piano twinkling fan - My favourite things - for one. Also - Passion Dance - especially for fusion fans(Herbie Hancock,Chick Corea fans etc.)

PS        Soul Jass/Jazz Funk/Hard Bop definately influenced early prog developement(jazz influenced especially) - Acid Jazz for this reason can sound a bit prog at times/as well as Trip Hop.

More of a late 60's Psychodelic/Acid Rock sound - definately influenced a few early Prog groups.

Smashing pumpkins regulary wrote songs over six minutes that had unconventional structuring. Billy Corgan even admits to be influenced by 70's prog bands like King Crimson and Yes. Hell, Siamese Dream even had a mellotron!

Most tracks with a Mellotron backing have a Prog feel.

Go to this site to find 2 good lists of Prog/non Prog artists who have used Mellotrons on their Albums http://www.mellotron.com/mellolis.htm     http://www.mellotron.com/mellist2.htm

Is this them http://www.overplay.co.uk/band.asp?band_id=1000674?

Sound pretty good - especially "Old Man"

They remind of Explosions In The Sky a little (well, "She Had Her Reasons" does)

Aye, that's them Milla.  Having seen them live 3 times, I must say they are a great live band too.  I have both of their EPs and I believe they have new material out later this year.  If you're interested, let me know.  Perhaps I can send you some MP3s or something...  _Old Man_ is a favourite of mine too.

It's great to get some positive feedback.  It's nice for a reasonably small band to get recognition, I shall let them know.

Cheers.

James.

Y that would be cool - how much are their singles (their website doesn't say)?

That's the great thing about the Internet you can discover all sorts of great bands.
