Hi Everybody,

I have a real challenge for you:

What is the BEST year of the Prog Rock and what is your favourite Albuns in that year?

Please choose only ONE year (I know there were so many magnificant years, but please choose just one).

My favourite year is 1971 with the albuns: “Nursery Crime”,  “Meddle”, “Fragile”, “Tarkus”, and "Aqualung”.

It’s really a pitty, in that year Renaissance and Camel didn’t release any Albuns...

So fellows, what is yours ?

Best Greetings...

I agree with all of your albuns but this is my challenge: chose ONE YEAR, PLEASE.

Best greetings

Jaja:

Ouch!  Well, although I "feel for you" re 1971, I'd have to go with 1970:

A Question of Balance (Moody's)
In the Wake of Poseidon (KC)
Trespass (Genesis)
Gentle Giant (GG)
Time and a Word (Yes)
Ummagumma (PF)
Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP)

Actually, 1973 isn't bad either...

Larks Tongues in Aspic (KC)
Selling England (Genesis)
Octopus and In A Glass House (!) (GG)
Close to the Edge (Yes)
Dark Side of the Moon (PF)
Brain Salad Surgery (ELP)

And I'm missing some others in both years...

Peace.

This was done before, and I believe 1971 was generally given the most kudos (Lots of other classic rock came out that year as well, like Led Zep IV etc). 1971 definitely gets my vote.

But basically a case can be made for any year 1968-1975, no real 'wrong answer'!
Marmalade...I like marmalade.

Well I will go with 1972:

  7. Per un Amico
  8. Birds of Fire
  9. Trilogy
  10. Demons & Wizards

Just to mention 10, but from 1970 to 1974 Prog' reached the peak.

Flat out the best year in the history of music. The music in 1978 is the most experimental, most sophisticated, best recorded, most weird, and the creepiest for me. I'm happy with 1978 and 1979. Look at these titles and tell me I'm wrong. I DARE you

iI'll go for 1973 - Tales from Topographic Oceans, and Selling England by the Pound (and genesis Live) - Would have been a good year to see both Genesis and Yes.

Oh and ELP had a seond-rater out with Brain Salad Surgery - The art work is fantastic as is parts of Karn Evil...But 20 minutes of class is hidden by the rest of the dross on that album as well.

The ELP wallers on here just can't see past Emersons Organ or Greg Lakes Knob.........

1970 - 1975 were all great years, but if I have to pick one year, I'll go for 1974. On the strength of:

Mirage - Camel

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis

Red - King Crimson

Relayer - Yes

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Bem vindo Jaja Brasil.

It's almost impossible to pick a single, best year but, if push came to shove, I suppose I would go for 1972 with Trilogy, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Foxtrot, Storia Di Un Minuto, Thick As A Brick, Living In The Past, etc.

Frenchie's point is to some extent valid. Many albums are recorded in one year, then released in the next. Which year do you pick then? Some were not immediately successful, so although they were released in say '72, they were not sucessful until '73. This was especially true in the 70's, when there were far fewer opportunities to hear new albums upon release. Albums tended to gradually climb the chart as word of mouth went round.

I tend to think of how good years were in terms of the albums I bought that year, regardless of when they were released. Best year from that point of view, 2004! Loads of remasters, and so many bands I've discovered through this site.ClapBig smile

Hi Everybody,

In "Fragile", I really confused the dates of record (71) and the date of release (72). Sorry guys!!!

So I will change my Favourite Year: 1973

Dark Side of the Moon / Topographic Oceans & Yessongs / Sellin England & Genesis Live / Ashes Are Burning / Brain Salad Surgery / The first Camel Album (in doubt if 73 or 74).

But I agree: from 68 to 75 are all great years to Prog Rock.

Best Greetings...
