I've seen a few of these for guitar players and singers. Let's give some love to the bass players out there.
Who are your top 5 prog bass players? Here mine:

Nice list, welcome to PA! Like me, you gravitate to Rickenbacker-playing artists (I have a 1973 Rick 4001, best bass ever!) Mine is similar:

Nice Bass! I'm a drummer but I've always been a big fan of bass players. They don't always get then recognition they deserve. |

1. Chris Squire
2. Geddy Lee 3. Tony Levin 4. John Wetton 5. Greg Lake I can't really think of anyone else anyway except for maybe Jaco Pastorius and Staley Clarke and they are both usually considered Jazz and or fusion. Mike Rutherford isn't bad but I don't think he really stands out much either. Maybe I need to pay closer attention to those early Genesis records.

We've had a poll like this before. Never mind, my 'Top 5' changes often, but currently I am indulging in the talents of these awesome (some underrated) bassists :
Pete Sears (definitely the musical heart of Jefferson Starship - so elaborate, up-front and precise. There is an absolute MAD clip on YouTube of one of his solos - this dude is outstanding !!). Johan Brand (Anglagard, and guesting on some recordings by other bands - never played a bum-note in his life). Frank Bello (Anthrax - heavily influenced by Steve Harris, Geddy Lee and Geezer Butler. Need I say more ?) Richard Sinclair (Canterbury bassist extraordinaire - again, PERFECT !!) ....and one from the Extreme scene - Colin Marston - currently in Gorguts, plays magnificently left-of-field stylings. One of a kind. And a runner-up in Spartacus R (Osibisa - listening to their albums shows me a lot of clever phrasing, restraint where needed, and just plays amazingly). Dunno - this list can change in a few weeks, months.......depends on the bands I'm indulging in. |

When you listen to truck-loads of incredible music, it's a really moot question as to who are the Top 5 - just a spur-of-the-moment choice of whatever artists are rocking your current listening world.
I could name, say 37 mind-blowing bassists and still not cover much ground. Pointless, yet curious, questions..... |

Has anyone mentioned Alain Ballaud of Shub-Niggurath? The bass solo on Incipit Tragaedia alone earns him a spot among the prog greats.
