Bolin really surprised me on Billy Cobham;s Spectrum. Musically the album was based more on jamming and it was a letdown for me, but I loved some of Bolin's solos.

as far as I'm concerned the formula for Deep Purple is "The Lord + Blackmore"

Putting Mr. Blackmore in a poll that too against other Deep Purple guitarists...decided the result of the poll even before it begun.
As for evidence.,"In Rock" & "Machine Head"...thats more than enuf to decide.. ![]() |

Tommy Bolin was a great guitarist, especially on that Billy Cobham LP Crosswinds. Richie Blackmore is a great Deep Purple guitarist - the band built their sound and reputation on his riffs.....thus, Blackmore is the best Puple guitarist. Bolin might have been more diverse (that James Gang album he was on saved the band).

Ritchie Blackmore because he was more fitting to the sound of the band. Not a fully developed Classical player that incorporated his past studies into rock along with Jon Lord. Blackmore was diverse in other styles but for a long time stuck to using a pick and occasionally played fingerstyle. Tommy Bolin on Billy Cobham's Spectrum displays a fusion guitar style. He sounded like he was still developing , but had capabilities to play extensive note passages rapidly and clean. For example the lead guitar in Miles Beyond by John McLaughlin. Bolin could have played that solo and worked it to perfection. It was sad how drugs destroyed the balance of his 2 hands. The picking technique of the right hand and the beautiful phrasing of the left. While on tour with Deep Purple he was unable to use one of his arms. He was lost by then. I wasn't fond of his writing, but I could tell he was taking the guitar seriously.

Tommy Bolin - when he was clean! an incredibly underrated guitarist. I'm not a Purple fan but my fave Purple album is Come Taste The Band. Sorry guy's I can't stand Blackmore, moody and overrated.

I should change the options and include: "all three"!
Surely I should vote Blackmore, historic (and first) DP axeman. But I have seen Morse in concert. Bolin like me a mess but it was a meteor.
So... Blackmore or Morse? Difficult. But I vote for Morse becaiuse I have seen Morse in Concert!

Enjoyed Ritchie Blackmore in the band and all through the 70's of course. I loved his guitar playing on "Pictures Of Home" which doesn't seem to be mentioned too much on this site. He plays some really interesting improvisation in the center and ending jam. My vote is Blackmore but seriously.....Tommy Bolin was a monster player and surprisingly diverse. I think maybe Blackmore respected his playing.
