Counterparts is not as memorable as the 4 albums that preceded it, it was an attempt to return to hard-rock (grunge was all the hype at that time, so they had to be more aggressive) after some nice synth-pop meets AOR albums (power windows, hold your fire and presto had all very "elegant" songs with memorable melodies). The only songs that I like on 'counterparts' are the ones that retain that "synth-pop/AOR" flavour like "everyday glory" or "nobody's hero".

So far, I've actually like this 80's and 90's Rush better than all else. Shocked

Geddy's voice has considerably improved from 'permanent waves' on, I like Rush's music from the seventies but sometimes the vocals make me cringe !

I have to agree with both of these statements.  I think that the problem that most people have with Test for Echo is the production.  I never realized there was a problem with the production until I found that out from people posting about it here.  i.e. it never bothered me.  Unfortunately, I am having some problems with getting into Clockwork Angels. I have given it some rest time to see if I like it more on the next listen.  I will be seeing them live on September 18th, so I foresee a Rush marathon in my near future.

Not a big Clockwork Angels fan either but I'm on Vapor Trails right now and it's pretty awesome.

Crap.  Is it Vapor Trails that people complain about the production on?  I think maybe it is this one, not Test For Echo.

I also have mixed feelings about clockwork, there are some good moments and some less inspired. But overall, it's a good album I think.
And you are lucky to attend a Rush concert, they never come to visit France : Why don't French people listen to good music ?

To be very honest, I don't even like Rush past Hold Your Fire all that much. I prefer their late 70s and early to mid 80s output.

By the way, love that Joanne Hogg is your avatar. What an amazing voice and Iona are one of my favorites. Very underrated prog band IMHO.

I must confess I never heard vapor trails in its entirety. I read and heard bad opinions on it (notably "the lack of guitar solos"), but right now, listening to "earthshine' on youtube it sounds very good.
All RUSH albums have something special !

At least, unlike other prog bands of the seventies, Rush never felt in commercial music (and no, 'power windows' is not a simple pop album, it's a briliant bombastic proggy synth-pop album)

And yes, IONA is VERY underrated, at least outside prog circles. As with RUSH, I cannot expect to see them in France. I listened a few hours ago to Joanne's 'looking into light' which is a collection of celtic hymns and it really brought tears to my eyes, her voice is simply amazing and her mates from IONA (+David Fitzgerald, who has played on early IONA albums) perform some excellent job, without being too much invasive.

I like Rush's Power Windows. I've never had a problem with it whatsoever. There's some inventive guitar work from Lifeson on that recording that's just so infectious.

If you had to pick one Iona album, which one would it be?

'woven cord' recorded live with an orchestra is a good retrospective. Otherwise you might have noticed that some of their albums sound more poppy than others (i.e. 'iona', 'journey into the morn', 'heaven's bright sun') but even their pop songs are fabulous. 'Beyond these shores' would be my favourite outside the live performance, it's full of nice melodies. I don't know their last album (without Troy Donckley) but it has a positive feedback on the german website babyblaue.

Have you heard the band Eureka's Shackleton's Voyage?  Troy Donckley makes a guest appearance on a couple of the tracks.

Beyond These Shores is my favorite album as well. I also like The Book of Kells a lot. Open Sky has really grown on me over the past few years and I've come to appreciate it. I think very little of The Circling Hour or Journey Into The Mourn. They're new album is decent, but it fails to move me like my favorites.

I am listening to tracks from 'another realm' on youtube, it sounds very promising so far. I might purchase the album soon. It is probably their most progressive album ('book of kells' is often heralded as their more progressive, but it was more ethno/ambient than progressive)
