I do not hate Dream Theater - I´m not that fond of LaBrie's voice (although he's a great singer, let's face it), but I do not like when they try to fill their albums with pop song which sounds more like U2 (if U2 members knew how to play their instruments with such prowess).

I love DT always have done. Don't find them "cheesy" at all, just brilliant.

I really like Images and Words but other then that album I find their albums either horrible (Falling Into Infinity/ 6 Degrees) or inconsistant (SFAM, Awake, WDADU etc.)
They are hardly the worst thing for prog though.
If anyone knows where I can get a copy of some Flute and Voice (Indo-Prog/Raga Rock) albums please PM me! Many thanks!

That surprises me because I thought you were a DT fan. I do agree that they are inconsistent but when they are on they are quite good. (When they are not  ..wellLOL) I am not fond of LaBrie's voice and hearing them live it is even worse.  ( . . .and the endless number of psots on that front.) He goes off pitch a lot because he is a baritone with the technique to sing out of his range. The band seems to be a vehicle for JP's guitar, which is okay;(the notion not his guitar) but I often wonder if he picked a medicore singer so as not to have anybody to compete with.

DO I HATE THEM???
No... I only think they're so much overrated, and that annoys me, just as in other similar cases (Britney Spears, Madonna...)
I think they have no gift for composing. Melodies are really weak.
They are very skillful of course, but that's only he surface. In FACT THRIR MUSIC IS VERY SIMPLE!
LA Brie's voice is a real failure.
They sound like all these boring, pompous, plastic-heavy-metal bands from '80 - Halloween, Queensryche... There's nothing more in DT.

I would have to say that I learned to hate DT from its fans here on this site.

Topic after topic after topic about DT. And if you don't think that God himself didn't bestow super-human powers to the members of the band then you just don't get it and must be attacked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So in the end I get I don't care one way or the other about the band. But I do really hate the attitude of their fans.

And I predict that one or many DT fans will attack this post and prove my point.

You know what irritates me somewhat as far as DT is concerned? The fact that I personally seem to become deaf to musical virtuosity when I listen to them! I would like to listen to my copy of Images & Words and at least marvel at this aspect of these musicians if nothing else (as I'm not really a fan of their song writing approach) but I just don't seem to be able to hear it to the extenct that I expect to hear it, considering how often the band members are being prased of being technically supreme even amongst prog bands. I know that this amazing virtuosity must be there as so many keep raving about it, yet for some reason I just fail to grasp it ConfusedEmbarrassed When I listen to classic prog bands the skill-factor is there even for a non-musician like me to hear and appreciate so why is it that this same factor manages to elude me in the case of DT? Beats me... And it makes me feel a bit ridiculous and confused to be honest, lol.

ClapClapClap

Something similar happens to me, I find Ruddess a great keyboardsist, the rare times I can barely listen Myung he sounds great, Petrucci is really good, Portnoy is a bit poser IMO but good technique and strenght.

Their solos are amazing, but their music says nothing to me the solo based structure trying to prove how they can do hardest things than the rest of the world is not enough.

Already Malmsteen proved that, the guy is an incredibly talented guitar player, but his endless guitar masturbations gained attention for a short peiod of time compared with some much less talented musicians.
