My doctor keeps telling me that I am too heavy every time that I see him, so Heavy prog for me.  I tend to prefer the rock just the way it is and I am generally not in opposition of it.

I voted RIO/Avant. It just as easily could have been Krautrock or Zeuhl. I feel a little more RIO today. Must be those Henry Cow Peel sessions I listened to this morning.

Good point.  It does seem odd that Genesis and Kansas are in Symphonic while Marillion and IQ are not Confused

As I recall from my days in that group, I think the rationale has somewhat to do with the dates of the respective band's heydays.  I'm sure Iván will be along soon to explain.

RIO/Avant for sure.

Eclectic is probably second.

Too hard to choose, I think I'll go with space/psych because it looks lonely up there. It could have easily been canterbury, eclectic, RIO/avant or symphonic.

I voted for symphonic cos I like Genesis, ELP, Kansas, Yes, that's the kind of prog I lean toward in general, but it's actually very hard to choose. My favourite prog band is Pink Floyd, but I don't like all the other psychedelic/space rock bands as much as them. Maybe I should have voted for proto-prog or prog related since I considered myself a classic rock fan who likes some classic prog bands, rather than a prog fan.

By reviews I suppose that it's symphonic but the thing is that those bands labeled as symphonic covered different ground ex What do Focus Yes and Genesis or ELP have in common?

On the other hand there isn't a jazz fusion record that I don't enjoy so I may go for that subgenre

If I can make an observation, I think the original poster was looking for the subgenre that best describes your personality, not necessarily the one that you like the best.

If I can make a suggestion, when you vote for a sub-genre, why not tell us why you emulate that particular genre.  Me, I went with Heavy Prog based on the OP's description of "You are Heavy Prog. You're the life of the prog party! While you definately have an intellectual side, all you really want to do is rock out! Drink and screw till you pass out, and do it all in 15/8! Woohoo!"

Funny stuff right there.

In that case, I would still stick with psych/space rock. Smile

Space/Psych, seeing as my favourite five or so albums would be considered the closest to that genre. If there was a Psych Metal, then that would be awesome. To be honest I like a lot of music, but in prog - it has to be trippy...

It was between RIO/Avant and Tech/Extreme, because I both try to be a unique person and am pretty weird but I am very sarcastic and cynical a lot of the time and don't really care for authority. I gave a vote for the much needed Tech/Extreme.

Let's see... I like mostly Progressive metal (with the likes of Dream Theater, Pagan's Mind, Ayreon, Devin Townsend, Redemption and a number of Italian bands), but I also appreciate some lighter stuff like prog rock (heavy prog, in your territory, such as Demians, Anathema ie.) and a bit from every other sub-genres (honorable mentions to Beardfish, Fantômas, Meshuggah, Kalisia, This Will Destroy You and many others)
