Topic: What was Rush last prog album in your opinion Posted: August 04 2011 at 16:29 |
Ive heard many people saying that from middle 80´s to now Rush stop to make prog albuns. Do you agree with that? For you, the music they doing now isnt prog at all??

To me Heavy Prog is one of the best genre names here....where Rush are categorized in the PA. It makes to me the most sense as it describes a band that is heavy rock/metal with progressive attributes.
Pretty simple....

Debatable to a point, but I'd say Signals was their last Prog album proper; GUP was - well I don't know what it was - and Power Windows sent them in a new, invigorated direction that was not Neoprog, Artrock, or Pop. Rush had always been an original, self-made band even when they imitated others and continue that tradition today.

Only album i can think of was their Zeppelin-esque debut. But even then, only Lifeson was anything close to Zeppelin. I just think it's because it's 70's hard-rock, its hard not sounding like Zeppelin.

they imitate no one now-- as for who they seem to have been impacted by in the past, it's clear they took influence from Zeppelin (like many bands), the Prog movement [Yes,Camel, etc.], and later a variety of New Wave acts

not practical, they were one of the most important prog bands and everything through Signals is cornerstone Heavy Prog, they practically define the subgenre .. and yes I know you were being sarcastic (or were you ??)

Power WIndows was the last time I felt Rush were trying to be ''progressive''. After that they slipped into a slightly lame eighties techno style before shaking themselves out of that malaise and rediscovering their rock n roll roots. I like their 90's albums plus Vapor Trails but none of them have a great deal to do with prog rock imo. The beauty of Rush is that they have adapted when they needed to and retained enough freshness to still be interesting after a very long career.

There's always been smooth changes in Rush albums. Old albums sound more progressive to me but I can say that all Rush albums are basically progressive. However, I have to admit that some new Rush songs are not like progressive rock

In reference to they recent albuns, id like to day that, even they beeing heavy, in the past they werent exactly "metal", they did things that influenced metal acts, like Iron Maiden, but never go through that particulaty are (what i apreciatte a lot), but now, after a long career following that direction to be heavy, but not metal they beggin to do metal things, as they discovered a new niche of public. What im trying to say is: Rush was more influential than influenced, but now that they discovered that many metal and prog metal bands does a sound influenced by then, they beggin to sound more heavier (vide Snake and Arrows).
