Foxtrot wins, especially because of Supper's Ready.

Supper's Ready wins, especially for the lines: "Six six six is no longer alone; he's getting out the marrow in your backbone; the seven trumpets blowing sweet rock and roll; gonna blow right down inside your soul; Pythagorus with the looking glass reflects the full moon; in blood he's writing the lyrics of a brand new tune..."

Even if Foxtrot didn't include Supper's Ready, I'd still find it quite a close call, as the first side of Foxtrot is still downright amazing, showing Genesis at some of their most mature, where I felt that Nursery Cryme could feel slightly underdeveloped at a couple of points. Supper's Ready however puts Foxtrot much higher for me, so I'll go for that.

Return of the Giant Hogweed and Fountain of Salmacis are excellent, but the rest of Nursery Crime - while great - is not quite as good as the main tracks on Foxtrot in my opinion.

Agreed,. Supper's Ready just puts it over the top. The album is absolutely perfect. Top tier progressive rock of the highest caliber, and still more perfect than SEBTP for me personally.

I'm glad someone else agrees; I almost got roasted a year or so ago claiming it sounded like someone flipped on "ON" switch on Salmacis (I.E. when Genesis finally "clicked" with their epicness). Fantastic album, but it feels, as you said, underdeveloped relative to what came next.

Oh I much prefer a touch of pastoral romaticism than "gritty" social-commentary/future dystopia in my "symphonic rock". I'll rather Zeuhl/RIO take care of the latter. What some call "mature" comes across as not very original or impressive observations to me. I'd take mellotron-washes, amateur oboe & flute, hermaphrodites, Old King Cole and Fang Son of Great Fang over the harsh barks about directors of Genetic Control in New Harlow Town any day.

Damn this is a hard one. "Supper's Ready" alone makes Foxtrot an essential own, but I find Nursery Cryme to be far more consistent. Ultimately I'm probably going to have to with Foxtrot because the great tracks make up for "Can-Utility and the Coastliners".

Nursery Cryme is my favorite Genesis album. So it's my pick.

The Lamb, Nursery and Foxtrot are the holy trinity of Genesis output.

I'll vote for NC because The Musical Box, Hogweed and Salmacis are evenly spaced and it makes for a more consistent album. But it's really close...Supper's Ready is their best song by far.
Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

The new line-up with Nursery Cryme were practicing in order to get to Foxtrot. Brilliant stuff!

For me it's Nursery, Foxtrot, and Selling England. I feel they were already going into a different direction (which I don't enjoy as much) with The Lamb.

That's quite literally what Nursery Cryme sounds like to me (not a bad thing at all, btw). I've always made the joke that Genesis "turned itself ON" during Salmacis, lol. It's like a Disney movie; you can FEEL the magic!

No way to make up a choice. It's like having to choose between ma and pa.
