Hee, I'm just having my first proper listen to some Art Zoyd (downloaded the 3-album thingy from eMusic).

What an interesting mixture!!

'Les Fourmis' is currently playing as I type this, and it's (seriously!) reminding me of an orchestral interpretation of Renaldo and the Loaf. LOL

I'll have to come back here eventually when I've done more listening, and vote in the poll...

That set is excellent value, but I wound up burning the 3 original albums as seperate discs because Musique Pour L'Odyssee is cut in half; the music makes a lot more sense when you hear each album as a distinct entity. And of course, the version of 'Symphonie...' in that set is the re-recorded one from 1980 (or thereabouts).

Having got Marriage and having listen to it a few times I can say I find it a good album, but I still think its not in the same level the first three albums are. 3,5 stars

Although I like their later albums, I think they peaked with Phase IV. Etat d'Urgence is my all time favourite AZ piece.

I think that Le Marriage... is very good, but not as consistently enjoyable for me as earlier albums.  It starts off in a fantastic manner that instantly grabbed me with "Sortie 134."  The rest of the album required more patience on my part, but I do find it rewarding (I have to be in the mood).  I'd give it a solid 4 stars, meaning "essential to any Art Zoyd aficionado's collection." :p
Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Is the Phase IV vote yours?

I miss that album in my collection, I dont want to rush it with Art Zoyd, every album needs his own special time and then I get the next one. But I think, if I dont get my hands on Haaxen first, this will be next

Guilty as charged! It's the Art Zoyd album I'd rescue from a burning building (if I could only rescue one).

A good way to get ART ZOYD music on the cheap these days is to get on Amazon where you can download for example LE CIEL ET L'ENFER for ....$ 7.99!!!  can't beat that!! sure you don't have the cover, but you can listen to it in your IPOD in the next 30 minutesThumbs%20Up

Soon, page 6!!  Who could have predict it at the beginning when EL BOTHY started the threadClap

I actually prefer every Art Zoyd album released before Le Mariage Du Ciel Et De L'Enfer. I'm listening and rediscovering how briliant Les Espaces Inquiets is and I find it strange that most seem to go for the "follow up". Mariage... is very good, but their first that gets me a little bored before I get to the last track. Is it simply more well known, or easier to find than the earlier releases?

Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me

It is an easier CD to purchase.  I'm surprised to see it leading too, actually.  It doesn't have the most ratings, nor the highest here:

ART ZOYD Albums

4.06 | 19 ratings
Symphonie Pour Le Jour Où Brûleront Les Cités
1976

4.05 | 13 ratings
Musique Pour L’Odyssée
1979

4.18 | 17 ratings
Génération Sans Futur
1980

3.88 | 12 ratings
Phase IV
1982

3.04 | 7 ratings
Les Espaces Inquiets
1983

3.93 | 13 ratings
Le Mariage Du Ciel Et De L'Enfer
1985

On the whole, I don't rank it as highly as earlier Art Zoyd albums, but it's a four star album for me, and essential to my collection.  I also get bored before the end.  It can be tedious, and too ambient, but the album really grabbed me with the opening track -- that has been one of my most played tracks over the last few years, but I rarely listen to the album fully from start to finish.  I suspect that in some it may be a vote for "Sortie 134" (first part), particularly, more than for the full album.

EDIT: Les Espaces Inquiets is really underrated (judging by the album ratings) in my opinion.
