Well if you want a bit of a challenge you'd be better off trying some
of the more established avant-prog bands first. At the very least
download some of their music before buying an album.

Hmm who would you consider established avant-prog bands...serious as I am not sure of labels here.
Thanks for the welcome Tony R and Fandango!!

Welcome Sharp, I hope you enjoy the site!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Thanks for the input everyone. Will definitely checkout Ozrics...and
probably Mars Volta as well as well since I am curious what is up with
this band to get these sort of reactions like "not for faint of heart"
LOL. Musical curiosity never killed this cat..just his pocketbook

If that list is anything to go by TMV may not be your cuppa... Can't go wrong with the Ozrics though!

The Mars Volta are great for listening to whenever, but I'd suggest starting out with De-Loused in the Comatorium, because France the Mute might scare you off unless you're familiar with how the group does things.
And I've only heard few pieces from Ozric Tentacles, so I really have nothing to add.

Welcome Roland, good to have you, Oh, and I think both of those bands are great. But be warned, Frances The Mute by The Mars Volta is not for the faint of heart

Aside from Jethro Tull and a few others, I'll have to agree with you.
Welcome, this place is (kind of) awesome.

Always dread this one as I don't know where to start....
Have been listening to progressive rock Music since about 1971. The
first progressive album I owned was Jethro Tull's Aqualung..if you
don't count Beatle material. I was probably attracted to the genre as a
result of playing the flute seriously from about the time I was 8 until
about 20. I have kinda lost track of flute over the years but never my
love of progressive music.
What progressivie music am I into? Well the list is long but will try to give a sprinkling here.
Yes
Jethro Tull
ELP -early stuff
Genesis - up through about ABACAB
Crimson - mainly early stuff
Marillion - both Fish period and more recent Hogarth (Brave and Marbles)
Transatlantic
Flower Kings and variants like Karmachanic and The Tangent.
Spocks Beard and Neal...
Porcupine Tree
as a result of Calprog and research before hand (Izz, Spiraling, Bubblemath and Tiles)
Camel
Ashra Tempel and later Ashra
Nektar...early stuff
Supertramp....early stuff
IQ
Mike Ohlfield
Ryuichi Sakamoto
Yellow Magic Orchestra
Peter Gabriel solo of course
Dream theater - some of their stuff.
PFM!!!
Caravan
Colloseum
Plus a lot of borderline prog and other stuff
Pink Floyd
Tears for Fears
Ultravox
Thomas Dolby
Todd Rundgren
Pat Metheny
Return to Forever
I could go on but this is enough for now LOL. I am a bit of a music
omnivore so have some pretty wide tastes but always come back to
progressive for my main stays.
Looks like a great forum here and happy some new friends refered me to it.
Later
Roland
