PS Perhaps saying 'swatting' instead of 'swotting' was a freudian slip!

Jon Evan?!! Tony Banks?!! Rick Van Der Linden?!! Peter Bardens?!! Assorted Camels?!! then Jean Michel Jarre (gasp!!!!)
Just shows how diverse our opinions, tastes, likes, dislikes are. I wouldn't have considered most of those even as anything other than second division players never mind soloists. Of the rest, at least Banks and Bardens are solid journeymen.
Then again, on reflection I have to admit that it's always possible for any player of a good standard to almost accidentally create a sublime moment, or at least one that touches certain listeners, so perhaps I'm not analysing properly when I take such an overview of playing rather than judging specific solos. Must do some swatting up!

I'm sure I'm at least the fifth to mention Firth. Both pianos and synths are lovely. Edited by hobocamp - April 11 2011 at 17:51 |

I've always loved this song but nothing beats the studio version IMO. |

For me this is the best solo of New rock progressive, it's not just keybaord but is a crossing between guitar and keyboards, go at 4.03 to hear it, it's marvelled!

It isn't exactly a full blown solo or anything, but I absolutely adore the little keyboard lick in Burden by Opeth, about 2:20 into the song.

John Evans when he was with Jethro Tull had a great solo in a song called With You There To Help Me
in the DVD called Jack In the Green Live in Germany. The solo is actually a song called By the Kind Permission of. |

Same as with guitar solos, I like best when the solo is innovative in terms of composition, melody or sound instead of showing artistic but meaningless virtuosity. Bank 's "Cinema show" certainly is the all-time classic. But I Like the strange ones even better: Minnears piano-madness on "Interview", Hammer 's screaming E-piano on "Stratus", and Joachim Kühn 's distorted Jupiter 8 on "Information", the best guitar solo that is none.
