   I know it's hard to decide on this but still. It is ineresting to know what band is the most popular among prog lovers. The result won't mean that leading band is the best. But it will show (I think) a strange result.

Thanks for votes, but I'm a little bit confused. Why no questions about VDGG and Peter Hammill. For me stands above this crowd, but he and his band were the pineers on prog rock. Remember "The least we can do..." Isn't it a chef d'oeuvres of the genre?

Although I am a great lover of Genesis, I'd have to go for King Crimson in this instance, if only for the fact they are still going after 35 years, still innovating & still progressing........ If only Genesis had continued with as much passion & conviction, as opposed to turning their heritage over to Phil Collins

It's very hard to choose, but at the moment I'm listening to Jethro Tull and Aqualung and Thick As A Brick are such masterpieces, so I voted for JT. But there is no point in denying Yes doesn't deserves it to be called best prog band.

By the way: I don't think there are enough choices. Where is Pink Floyd? Where is Magma? Rush? Focus? Soft Machine? etc...

Gentle Giant hands down no contest. The most complex and thoughtful of all "prog" bands minus the pomp and pretentiousness. Even my wife who teaches classical music at university (voice) actually really loves this band.

Floyd? You right. It's my fault, I shouldn/t forget them.

But others. I don't think Magma deserve to stand among this bands. Rush - they appeared too late, Soft Macchine - too psychedelic for classical prog.

 and Focus? Well, they are good, but still not enough.

Jethro Tull, but only for the albums they recorded from 1972 to 1979, i.e. with the great drummer Barriemore Barlow.

I voted ELP for what they did between 1970-1973 and they have been my favourite band for nearly 30 years. However for longevity,consistency and staying power over 4 decades then Canadian band Rush 'boss it'.  ELP, Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd havn't done anything worthwhile since 1978/79 while Rush  continued to move forward after the seventies with great albums such as 'Moving Pictures','Power Windows' and 'Test For Echo'.AND they are still touring with NEW MATERIAL!

I voted for Yes of course but it is all relative. If your favorite band is JT, then that is who you will vote for. Its the same with Guitar polls.....they always spring up different results thus, its not  really possible to judge the best.

The question is: why a band is great? I think 3 options: One, wonderful music; two, brilliant musicians, and three, number of imitators (or influenced bands) in the last 30 years. In three cases, Genesis era Gabriel don't admit competition. My vote for it.

Maybe you're right about Soft Machine, Rush and Focus, but Magma is very special. They're not my favourite, but their music is incredible, mixing minimal music with jazz and rock!

   In seense of this word (classic prog band) Magma a little different. I don't mean they bad. No. But as you say, they had a srong jazz influnce.

I agree with the 3 options Macelo gives. But I shold say that maybe Yes could fit also.

One can also add a fourth rule: Not falling into crap recods for an important part of their career. Now things start to get complicated...

Anyway, I voted for Camel. Just because I wanted them to have at least one vote (and, besides 'The Single Factor', most of their records are above average. Maybe because they jumped the 80s and became independent in the 90s)

Yes, Paco, you're right! And even The Single Factor is quite better than Invisible Touch or 90125.

Sorry, but 90125 features great songs and is one of my favourite Yes albums. Beautiful keyboards, fine drumming, great backing voices and bombast. Moreover, Yes recorded for this record one of their best instrumental tracks : cinema.

90125 is a fairly good pop album ('Owner of a Lonely Heart' was a well deserved hit). But there's no excuse for 'Open Your Eyes'. And I know there's an excuse for 'Union', but it still is a dissapointment.

I should also say that I like many tracks from 'Invisible Touch', but it's maybe nostalgia for my early teeneger days.

There are no excuses for union or anything yes have released in recent years. As a live act they rock with a vengeance, but they have got nothing new to say as a creative force. I voted for Crimson as they are the only outfit who try to push the envelope further.
