I rember that after the exit of THRAK by KING CRIMSON BILL BRUFORD (BILL BRUFORD... man) said: "We are the sole band to play intelligent Metal". He understood that the Crimson played a Prog such near the Metal to be assimilated... This would have to be the Prog Metal (Uhm... IS).

That was quite surreal, indeed.... fun, though!
![]() BTW, of course Prog Metal exists... why shouldn't it? I'm not quite convinced of Mike's chart, though. Do you really see Rock, Prog and Metal as initially separate genres? Why do you think so? Sorry if it is the 1,000th time someone asks... ![]() |

Prog is not bounded by any late 60's or early 70's bands...
If it is, then it is not progressive.
Progressive music evolves, it doesnt end...
Metal ( for most of the metalheads here i suppose) is broad, deep and beautiful...
I cant see any reason why it cant also be progressive.....

I believe that Sub Genre were created to distinguish a band from another one. Otherwise must to say: Band A= Band B that plays like Band C but except for Band D. Nevertheless B+ C+ 50% of D= Band E. Band F+ mixed Band of everything the other= Band A!!! That it is a true slaughter!!! Better to introduce some Sub Genre that any rate is not binding. The King Crimson, in fact (and for example), produced album Symphonic, Art Rock, Canterbury, Experimental Rock and Experimental Prog Metal!!! How you see also to explain the music of a band is necessary put categories and under categories... But it is clear than all it is reduced to the stupid fusion of R&B and Country with a bulky amount of contaminatios of those that (still today for a lot of persons) picked music.

It's difficult to put all information in one chart ... the chart only has two dimensions, and we would need at least need 3 to properly display the relations between Rock, Metal and Prog. In my chart I just wanted to show that Rock and Metal are separate genres. In a way the progressive sub genres are strongly related though ... for example Neo Prog and Neo Prog Metal, Symphonic Prog Rock and Symphonic Prog Metal, Avant-Prog Rock and Avant-Prog Metal etc. etc.. But the most important thing about Prog Metal is that it has a similar sub genre structure as Prog Rock. That fact alone strongly suggests that it would be wrong to model Prog Metal as a sub genre of Prog Rock. |

Quite a few of them, actually... Though Mike may not agree on that, the development of prog-metal owes quite a bit to the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica and Megadeth, to name but a few. And what about Rush's first four albums, in particular "2112"? |

^Rush NEVER created prog metal. Although they influenced it heavily. IMO Maiden actually did it
![]() Metallica I hate, and Megadeth are not prog at all, so it leaves Maiden.
Judas Priest had one prog-related album (Sad Wings of Destiny its called, I think...).
I know my prog and metal fairly well, so I just have my own valid or invalid theory's

'Scuse me, what makes you say that Megadeth are not prog and Maiden are? And of course we're talking about "Sad Wings of Destiny", not of "Painkiller"...

Yes, they were. You can hear it especially in the instrumental sections (YYZ etc.).
I just can't hear anything prog in Mustaine's band. They aren't that complex, fairly simple song structures etc... A great metal band though
![]() And Maiden songs on the other hand had lots of complex, interestingly structured compositions, with an epic feel and, in lots of cases, conceptual themes. The whole Album 7th Son of a 7th Son is a concept album, and I think its the 1st 100% neo prog metal album around

Megadeth wasn't a band with cool unison instrumental sections, but the songs are anything but amaetur. Megadeth is actually one of the few metal bands which I believe had perfect balance of skill between each single member. Edited by AtLossForWords - June 21 2006 at 15:59 |

I think our sight should document more specific sub-genres. For instance... there is a huge damn difference between Opeth and Rhapsody.
