Prog Metal does exist. Withouut Opeth's progressive touch they would be just another death metal band. The prog side of metal makes the band that much better. |

you ask if prog metal exists... the answer is as simple as answering the question: "Do you breathe?" Edited by toolis - August 20 2006 at 03:30 |

Haha, I missed this thread originally and have been quite amused by reading back through it.
Oh, and regarding the discussion that took place on the last page about who the first prog-metal band was, Watchtower's Energetic Disassembly came out in 1985, before Maiden's supposed prog-metal album Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, before it had occured to Queensryche to play anything other than slightly above average hair metal, and even just before the genre's equally underrated co-founders Mekong Delta had sprung into existence. Since having this thread here is going to prove pretty pointless in the next little while, I figured I'd just get that out of the way. |

"Rage For Order" was progressive metal in its own unique way... it took almost a decade for the fans to appreciate, whatever that means... |

Prog metal exists, of course. But a lot of bands, qualified by PA as "prog metal bands", aren't progressive, aren't prog metal bands, especially Death, Edge Of Sanity or Rhapsody. I have been listening to heavy, thrash, death, black metal since 1987 and I don't think - for instance - EoS is prog metal band...

Of course 'Prog-Metal' exists, in (at least) as much as it has been 'defined' into existence.

I roadied for several bands in the S.F. metal scene during the early 80s and the term 'progressive metal' was just starting to be batted about. Back then it referred to a metal band with progressive leanings and though it has become a category, it's still metal with progressive leanings. Yes, it exists.

Of course it exists. I don't see why people think that metal can't be progressive. Jazz can be progressive. Rock can be progressive. Electronica can be progressive. Folk can be progressive. Why can't metal be?
In my opinion Progressive Metal is the best prog subgenre there is. But thats because i like loud music. Some people don't. Just because you don't like a style of music or a band doesn't mean it's not progressive. Shadow Gallery is so horrible and boring it makes me want to puke, but i'm not going to argue when someone tells me it is progressive. |
