If you want a prog chick's 2 cents, I am always complaining about this when me and husband go to prog shows and meet the usual 20-30 other prog friends: not only I'm always the only female there, which is dead boring, but everyone tend to assume that I'm completely uninterested to the show, music and such. |
I have to say, my experiences at shows have always been completely different. Men tend to be genuinely curious and are willing to strike a conversation just to get the story behind my prog hobby, lol. Last May I went to a prog event here in Helsinki and chatted to a fellow male progger there, who was so happy to meet a female prog fan that he literally hugged me when we parted I only had to list some of my favourite bands and his eyes would lit up with delight and he would have that disbelieving look on his face. "You mean to tell me that you actually like KING CRIMSON?! Unbelievable..." Heheh, it's kinda sweet because these men are usually genuinely taken aback by a woman, who professes to know something about Bill Bruford's drumming style.

There's nothing wrong with calling a woman a chick. Its a compliment its like the female version of a dude Its a sign that youre cool. I also call my girlfriends chicks and they call themselves chicks. So no problem with that

Yes, quite strange how they manage to be smarter than men. I guess size doesn't always matter ...

Hopefully I'm not repeating anything from the 8 pages so far. But I remember a post on an old thread about why certain people (male or female) don't appreciate or have any interest in prog. Anyways, this one post suggested that too often the prog fan will "inflict" the most hardcore prog on a non-fan, rather than just playing something that the other person might like, or even find that it shares similarities with their non-prog tastes. It was also mentioned that omitting the fact that the music you're playing for them is prog doesn't hurt either. This would be so to not conjure up any prejudices or stereotypes. TO summarize, you may love Magma, Amon Duul, Yezda Urfa, et al. But even within the prog world, these groups enjoy a limited & fanatic following, as their music is not meant for everyone. If you start with , say, something from Supertramp's Crime of the Century, then segue into some Gentle Giant from Free Hand like Just The Same, follow it with Genesis' More Fool Me, then Genesis' I Know What I Like; maybe play Floyd's Wish You Were Here, take a track from Stackridge's debut, and so on ... you may find that once your "mainstream listening friend", female or not, might be more open minded to prog once you tell them that this is what you were just playing for them. How many metalheads got into prog by starting with Rush. There are surely people out there that worked backwards from the Collins era Genesis to Gabriel's time with the band. It's just a matter of finding the wedge, instead of using the hammer. I am more open to RIO because I started listening to Univers Zero, thinking that it was "chamber" prog.
P.S. just thought of an analogy - think of it as the musical equivalent of telling someone "this food/meat is good. It tastes just like chicken"

I remember a couples of years ago when I made a surprise to the sexy girlfriend of an old pal; she is rather open minded when it's time for a new musical experience: I put Crying For Help 4 by Arena. She was really not impressed: she almost laughed at the song: I felt so mad, because I love this song and also because I was sure she would have liked it. She delivered a brutal comment like "The lead singer sounds like the ridiculous PJ Proby!
On the other hand, years before that happened, this track was playing in my car when 2 good looking female students looked at me and asked me about the song: they said it was really pleasant to hear: One of the girl was looking at me in the eyes when this was playing: I think it could have worked! mmmm......

I took my wife to a Porcupine Tree gig last year, and she loved it so much that she wanted to buy a hoodie. However, she still won't play the CD's when we are driving along....
Oh well....

I almost seriously replied to this thread. But then I read

and realized that there is no need to repeat the man with a higher number. If she hasn't been playing the violin since she was 3, there's a 99.999% chance she doesn't care about music. Music is just social and sexual (can you dance or f**k to it?). //EDIT: And that's not to say men are really that much better; men just don't show off their bodies in motion like women. However, we're all social animals.

When a girlfriend was really into me, she would love the music I loved (prog) and take an interest in it, but of course it turned out to be because she wanted me, not the music. Afterwards, when the relationship plateaued, their interest in prog essentially disappeared. Of course so did our relationship, lol.

I think Prog Opinion was only trying to be provocative and was expressing a severe lack of balance between male and female fans. I doubt he is gay (so what if he is). I am not as I have been waiting to meet a "Prairie Rose" who likes prog. The search goes on.....

Well, i just don't want prog to have the same fame as power metal, widely known for being somehow gay. You guys can put the initial blame on Manowar and its homo-erotic acting / dressing / etc back in the 80's but power metal bands nowadays don't help to improve the genre's fame (except some few exceptions, like Blind Guardian)

Judging by the audiences I see on most prog DVD's, most female prog fans are of the older lesbian variety.

There's actually a lot of gay men in the prog commnity, including myself and Man Overboard (prog is actually what brought us together ). There's also all of the members of Arena. Mick Pointer and Clive Nolan are my OTP, and Rob Sowden is my favorite gay frontman.

I don't even care about prog, I have enough trouble finding a female who likes decent music
edit: finding a female who will communicate with me
edit: finding a female who doesn't flee at my presence
