I love them both. But Dream Theater brought Prog to metal. And without DT there would be no Riverside. |
Watchtower, Queensryche, Voivod, Fates Warning all spring to mind as bands that did Prog Metal before When Dream and Day Unite was released (we wont even go into the matter of Metallica). Your second statement is harder to refute though.

If I could vote, I would go for Riverside because LaBrie is a whiny b*****d with DT, although he sounds much better on The Human Equation.

Riverside. Labrie's vocals annoy me.

Riverside for me. Like others, I'm not particularly keen on the LaBrie's vocals, and while DT have made some great albums they've never had the really top-notch consistent batting average that Riverside have.

Riverside for me! I really like Dream Theater, but they're starting to get a bit paint by numbers lately. IMO they always sound the same(with the exception of Train of Thought that goes ferociously from beginning to end). DT really needs to try different stuff. I think with their talent they could be a killer symphonic prog band.
