Yes, yes they are.

which album(s) by Ruin should I chek out?

OK, so Ruins are more of a noise/math rock thing than a metal thing per se, but they're plenty loud and complicated, especially considering on most albums they're a drums/bass duo. My route into them was their last studio album Tzomborgha - I worked my way back from there.

If you want a more expanded sound then you could try their sister group Koenjihyakkei. They feature keys, sax etc. and some pretty intense operatic vocals. Again, loud and breathtakingly complex.

Ultimately, I doubt we'll ever see a true metal-orientated successor to GG. Their mix of eclecticism, invention, compositional skill and sheer FUNKINESS (which I was pleased to see you didn't overlook) is just such a unique and inimitable combination.

Has anyone suggested Cardiacs yet? I usually end up recommending them sooner or later, whatever the circumstances, as they're basically the best thing in the entire history of things. Again, not strictly a metal band, but they dabble rather effectively on the album Sing to God. Check out the song Firey Gun Hand.

I mean it fits the requirements and I know they are geniuses (some of my friends even describe them as music 2.0) but I just hate the Alvin and the Chipmunks vocals

Although I would say "not remotely a metal band," I still mostly agree with you

I never get any Gentle Giant vibe from Sing To God.

It is amazing though. I always just hear it as Avant Punk.

Yes, you're right. I'm not much of a metal fan, so I honestly don't know where the line is generally drawn between "big loud riffy guitars" and "METAL". I would've thought songs like A Horses Tail and Angleworm Angel had that metal quality but I could be wrong. All much of a muchness, if you ask me.

Really? I think there's way more going on in that album than just avant-punk. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that "Sing to God" is probably their least punky album. It's their earlier stuff (early tapes through to "On Land and in the Sea") which really give off the old school punk vibe. After that everything goes a bit wonky and poppy and heavy and psychedelic.

Regarding Gentle Giant-y moments from "Sing to God", I'd point to the crazy instrumental section in Firey Gun Hand (just before the 4 minute mark), the closing theme on Fairy Mary Mag (which also pops up on Odd Even), Wireless, Dog-Like Sparky... Obviously there's a lot more to that album and Cardiacs in general than mere Gentle Giant-isms, but they're scattered here and there throughout all of their albums. In fact, that's what first drew me to Cardiacs, Gentle Giant having previously been my favourite band of all time.

I get it, I'll definitely check Cardiacs out

I've just browsed through my music collection and... I'm surprised no one suggested Freak Kitchen, and it's probably the closest one yet

And why the hell Freak Kitchen is not on the website?

Massacre, with Bill Laswell and Fred Frith. Some may not call them "Metal" though; I do. About the only metal I like.

I was starting to get worried when you all that post and no Cardiacs until I got to the last paragraph LOL. Even if this was a polka forum I'd be suggesting them.

That's a tough one. Lots of Crimson influenced metal out there, but Gental Giant? The nearest I can think of is Unexpect.

Exactly vice versa for me. Hardly anything could be more boring than Behold... to me.
