NEED HELP
What are some pointers/tips for starting a prog rock band? 
My 3 friends and I are looking to form one, but are having problems coming up with original ideas and such. 
Please Help! Any help is appreciated.Heart

Steal material from the best in order to learn and hone your sound, then start composing your own.   Remember; there are almost no totally original ideas, and the real definition of a composer is not one who fabricates music out of thin air, but rather one who utilizes everything all past composers have arranged and then makes it their own.   Keith Emerson used practice scales to derive inspiration (not to mention his semi-classical past); Tony Banks lifted almost everything he did from Vivaldi or Bach or Satie; and Andy Tillison (love ya,man) takes so much from Tony Banks they might as well related--  which of course they are musically speaking.

Forget about "coming up with an original idea" and just start playing together. Like David says, tap into your influences. Build on their arrangements, take a classic non-prog song and make it prog. You need to build a band personality and then let the writing emerge naturally. Like the man says (and I have no idea what man) How do you get to Carnegie Hall? The E train with a transfer to route 104. Then Practice, practice, practice.

Thanks The Dark Elf, this post was mainly for my bandmates...I'm the drummer of the band but I'm sending these responses to them as tips, as they've never played with groups before in front of an audience.
