I remember the music of 1981 very well, and the first time I heard Golden Brown. 1981 was truly the first year when it was no longer possible to discern a clear and cohesive New Wave sound as easily as you could in 78, as there were now so many different new genres around. Post-Punk had been around for a few years, Two Tone and the Nutty Sound, pub rock, punk, and the Mod revival were all still in full swing, and of course Goth, Industrial and NWOBHM were going from strength to strength, but most prevalent on the radio and at discos were the synth and New Romantic bands.  

Is your favourite among my list of 1981 favourites?

Some interesting choices there for sure (The Cure, Bauhaus, Japan, among others)

But none of my 3 favourites is on the list.

About half of these are favorites and hard not to vote for Kraftwerk whom I think are somewhat in a league of their own... Bauhaus, Human League, Cure would fill the rest of a top five. I voted for Eurythmics. A lovely krautpop-album with surprisingly strong song material I think. Somewhat ahead of its time as it resembles later sort of introvert indie/shoegaze (which I don't like much but I always seem to enjoy proto-versions of anything).

I love the bass playing on Ultravox song the Voice.

I particulary is inspired and influenced by 80s post-punk, sharp, flobby and restless bass that is even slightlyvon purpose off beat, also shown in the Stranglers albun from the samw year.

I expect that I have heard many of these, but the only ones I recall are Kraftwerk's "Computer World" and Gary Numan's "Dance". Despite that, I'll give a vote to Kraftwerk.

Some mightily good albums on the list. I vote for the Cure album, which is probably their straightest, most decluttered dark effort, expressing its mood as clear and strong as can be. I also love Tin Drum, Computer World, Kollaps, and some more are pretty good.

My number one album from 1981 though is "Sleep No More" by the Comsat Angels, one of my top 3-5 albums of all time, which could be described in terms similar to the Cure album with some more cutting edge and variety.

Great song and album, but I've gone for Tin Drum. Also like the Banshees album.

I hear ya, but it doesn't quite fit the style, however don't panic as I am going to do a post-punk, experimental-pop poll for 81 as well, which will include bands like Cardiacs, Comsat Angels, Devo, Durutti Column, The Fall and so on.

Lots of great options and it was tough to choose, but ultimately I went with Juju. The guitar playing is outstanding on that album and "Spellbound" is one of my favorite openers concerning rock albums in general.

Simple Minds...then The Cure.....then Japan. Bought all 3 at the time....I still play Sons and Fascination/Sister Feeling Call...I don't play the other 2 anymore.
