I wouldn't describe Tormato, ATTWT or Signals as ridiculous. Tormato is significantly worse that GFTO, and I would concede that Circus of Heaven is somewhat ridiculous...
I actually think ATTWT and Signals are generally pretty strong albums.
However, 90125 - Big Generator perhaps..

Twas a figure of speech ! better title than "two albums in sequence the latter being a lot worse than the previous release"

Except in the case of your last two examples that simply isn't true. But hey, it's all a matter of taste. With that in mind:
Pink Floyd: Meddle -> Obscured by Clouds Animals -> The Wall
King Crimson Red -> Discipline
Porcupine Tree Fear of a Blank Planet -> The Incident
Steve Hackett Defector -> Cured

I honestly can't think of any 'sublime to ridiculous' examples but
ELP-BSS to Works Vol 1 almost qualifies for me.

I agree, though I still like Tormato.

Iron Maiden: Seventh Son... to No Prayer for the Dying Yes - GFTO to Tormato (I agree) Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers to House of Blue light Genesis - Duke to Abacab Dream Theater - Awake to Falling Into Infinity
I'll be back with more examples. None of the albums i mentioned are ridiculous, they are just weaker than the first mentions.

I did think about the Genesis one that you mention but its just that I'm not convinced Duke is anything more than 4 stars and Abacab probably no worse than 3 stars (although I hated it when it was released). It was the radical change in their musical emphasis that grated more than any massive drop in standards. Dodo/Lurker is also one of my favourite Genesis tracks.

Jon Anderson went from Olias of Sunhillow to the almost unlistenable Song of Seven (only the title track redeems it.) It would be difficult to find a larger fall.

Mayhem - De Mysteriss Dom Sathanas - Grand Declaration of war
Gorguts - from wisdom to hate - colored sands
Atheist - unquestionable presence - elements
At the gates - terminal spirit disease - slaughter of the soul
My bloody valentine - loveless - mbv
cynic - focus - traced in air
Pendragon - not of this world - believe

Not as familiar with Rush's "transition" from Moving Pictures to Signals, but you are spot-on about Yes and Genesis! With Genesis, it might be understandable with the departure of Steve Hackett at that point. But, Yes? After such a great album as GFTO, what were they thinking releasing Tormato? 'Ridiculous' is the polite word for it (no doubt...)

VDGG - debut The Aerosol Grey machine to The Least We Can do is wave to each other
Obviously the reverse is the case - being that the debut is nowhere near as good as TLWCDIWTEO
