I thought it was Spanish or Portugese. The o ending sounds vaguely Spanish.

Mel Gibson is quite vague artistically speaking. I have to give him some credit, not every actor can make it as a film director. But his work as such is just average and commited to efectism and money. I'll stick to Fellini.
