Zappa-metal?

I'm no big expert on what you are looking for, but Dream Theater is highly influenced by Frank Zappa, particularly in their instrumental sections. For example, songs like Beyond This Life (especially the Live at Budokan version), Erotomania, Metropolis Pt 1, and Outcry may be what you are looking for; plus many more...

Interesting that in the archives Grand Guignol's tracklisting is uncensored.

Not sure if this is an example of hypocrisy or people not giving anywhere near enough of a sh*t about a masterpiece album.

I'll leave that for you to decide.

you need to check out some Lumsk i think heavy folk metal with progressive leanings, it is realy folk but they also bring in chanting and classical music.

centum, you are welcome here. Welcome.

And that SYL comment... It was perfect.

thank you, i've been using PA as a source of great new music for a couple of years, and there's no one around with more or less similar taste in what one can describe as 'progressive music' (not just prog rock), so I guess it was inevitable that I join the forums

Yeah, by the way I study linguistics and specialize in English but I don't really have any practice with native speakers, so It would be great if all of you guys point my mistakes

But, still, I have no idea what to suggest. What exactly do you mean by Gentle Giant metal? I'm assuming either metal with medieval or folk tendencies or metal with heavy use of polyrhythms.

Thanks)

By Gentle Giant Metal I mean metal with at least one attribute typical of GG

what I likea about GG most  of all is probably eclectism, but they have this particular style of eclectism, where all the elements they combine are awesome as hell

I really like their funkyness, jazzyness, Rabelais and psychology-influenced lyrics. I like that their music is in major key most of the time, their medievel influences, great vocal work (in terms of vocal the closest thing is probably POS's Entropia) and so on
It's not a kind of rational search where I know exactly what I want, I mean I've already recieved advice to listen to some great bands I've never heard before

meshuggah's very far from what I'd descrive as GG metal, although technically it's not wrong)

as probably most people who listen to prog for more than a month, DT makes me sick. And I never really liked a single album by them, just some songs like The Dance of Eternity

Although I've listened to some albums by Zappa that I didn't find very experimental, I can't get this image out of my head that his music is like miRthkon without distortion)

oh, come on

Townsend is like one of the greatest musicians of all times for me

and Ziltoid is not his personal best, Infinity is probably more Gentle Giantish
