Have not heard all of these so its hard to comment. Also, progressive metal not my favorite
genre, however, I do think that Spiral Architect kicked prog metal up one notch
with their one and only cd; A Sceptics Universe.

Out of those, Operation: Mindcrime and then Images & Words. My top 10 (limiting to one per band):
1. Christ 0 - Vanden Plas 2. Operation: Mindcrime - Queensryche 3. Sympathetic Resonance - Arch / Matheos 4. Train of Thought - Dream Theater 5. The Art of Navigating By the Stars - Sieges Even 6. El Nino - Eldritch 7. Room V - Shadow Gallery 8. Visions - Haken 9. Celestial Entrance - Pagan's Mind 10. Shine of New Generation Slaves - Riverside
Honorable mention to Seventh Wonder, Voyager, and not-quite-metal prog bands like A.C.T and Enchant (actually, even the last Riverside album is slightly pushing it).

My favorite album in "Prog Metal" is technically in another subgenre and that's Crack the Skye

Hands down Fates Warning's "A Pleasant Shade Of Grey." Then comes Riverside's "Rapid Eye Movement."

Having trouble venturing into "Progmetal", and I'm not too high on metal, for that matter (I'm into prog!). But it appears this offshoot of prog is gaining quite a following, so the question is: What is THE one progmetal album that exemplifies the subgenre the most and could be used a starter kit for anyone looking to get turned on to it completely.
