Topic: Awkward Situations Because of Prog? Posted: September 10 2007 at 22:02 |
As a 19 year old college student, listening to prog has definatly put me into some awkward situations. For example
1. Buying prog cds in stores. Now there arent that many name brand stores that sell prog, but it made me feel weird and alienated when at Best Buy I bought In the Court of the Crimson King and Close to the Edge at the same time. The cashier was a girl my age, and she looked at the cds and looked at me and made some remark like "This stuff is weird. How can you even listen to this?" I admit, I was pissed, but I left and blasted all of Close to the Edge all the way home in my car.
2. Listening to music with friends. Not a single one of my friends likes/listens to anything prog. Most of them listen to classic rock, which I like, so its ok. But whenever I go anywhere with my friends, or the come over etc, I put away my prog collection.

I laugh and blast it maniacally in defiance if there's people around who don't like it

Yeah, I basically do the same thing. I think my roommate/dorm hates me whenever I turn on music.

Definately, I was in a car with a friend of mine, I told him I bought an album by porcupine tree, and he asked who was porcupine tree. So I said "pretty much the biggest name in progressive music right now", and him being a pop lover said "I've never heard of them, so they must suck, and flip burgers when they arent on tour". I was furious and got in a major argument with him, where he thought he was right about everything because he listens to mainstream radio! After that car trip i felt very betrayed and misunderstood.

there's a kid at my school who hates PT, so I make fun of him by saying his favorite band, Pearl Jam, sucks. Which it does. A lot. Gotta go for the jugular really

People just hate Prog cuz deep down they realize its more intelligent, so they have to demean it to make themselves feel better about being slaves to music which largely conceived by a bunch of rich white guys in a board room.

I do myself the pleasure of using the portable CD player, so they can look at my creepy looking CD's of my death metal... so they dont see my prog
Actually, I just got in a music theory class, where there is many artistic rock lovers there, and about ninety percent prog! So, I am very lucky to find myself in that position.

I recently found a guy at work who listens to prog. I bought some speakers from him and when I came to pick them up he asked what music I listened to. I cringed as I started to rattle off Mahavishnu Orchestra, Gentle Giant, Zappa, etc. To my amazement he stopped me halfway thru, saying that he loved GG and MO and that he would make me a mix cd to go with the speakers. I sorta stared at him for a second, because I wasn't sure if I had just heard what I wanted to hear or if he had actually just said that. But he came thru with the cd so w00t for me.

I'm an 18 year old college student, and it's really difficult here. A majority of the music scene around here is just bad indie music, it's monotonous and boring. It puts me at odds with alot of the music majors who like obscure music, who can defend their music because of a higher knowledge of theory but wont listen to mine objectively because they don't sing about retarded indie subjects.

ughhh, That whole Indie scene is disgusting, it's just a bunch of skaters thinking they are too good for a record label (and too self richeous to stay off the weed ), and make underground pop music.

There is a small percentage that actually knows what they are doing but, yeah a vast majority that I see are people who play light guitar, and their fans are the opposite of goth metal, plain and boring, I know that it seems ignorant to write off a whole genre, and I'm trying not to but when everyone comes up to you and scolds you because of the fact that your music has distorted guitar, it makes me crazy.

Shuddup, there is more to indie than that, besides all music is to good for record labels, and I havn't known many prog fans that have not done weed, after all isn't prog just pretentious rock music.

I can relate. I'm a freshman music education major, with some musical knowledge, so for prog some of the time I actually know what is going on, but most of the time I dont, because in the musical realm, I dont know that much. Pretty much everything on my campus is the alternative/indie music scene where we have local bands play that stuff almost every weekend, and so far, none of the other music majors even take prog seriously.
One of my professors, my theory teacher, said that prog is around the level of jazz and classical, as they all roughly used the same ideas.

[/QUOTE] That's why I jumped back and said that there are some indie bands that do not adhere to the simplicity and monotony of a good chunk of indie music.

Don't hate. I'm a skater and I listen to indie and like it just as much as any other musical genre (prog included). Stop the prejudices.
