I never really liked Emerson's style, which is a shame because he's extremely talented. Wakeman is my favorite, and IMO Awaken is the ultimate performance by a keyboardist.

<sigh>  Here we go again.  I'll go on record here voting for Emerson.   Not that one is really better than the other, but Emerson excels in carrying a band, while Wakeman at his best is more subtle.

I agree with that assessment. And I like subtlety. Emersone's style seems to beat you over the head a bit much for my taste.

Emerson, because i really like his style.
He can play all from silly ragtime/boogie-woogie stuff, to serious prog, to classical... All extreamly good!

I think they a re the 2 most embarrasing keyboardists in prog, not that they lack tecnichal abilities, but because they just can't seem to find any reasonable means to use their knowledge to create something artistically worth the try, instead of  over the top theatrical presentations, and awefully pompous actitudes while on stage. I hope I don't offend anyone with this remarks.

There is a lot of truth to what your saying, but I think Emerson does get it right sometimes.
I notice you have Sun Ra in your avatar, no wonder you aren't impressed with the other two.
You might want to check out Bullfrog from ELP Works Vol II, the end of the song sounds a lot like Sun Ra, other parts of the song sound like Ornette and Miles.

Awwww.....I wish the question had been who one's favorite was...but I'm going with Emerson simply because of it's asking for who's the best.

Although I like Emerson more than Wakeman so I don't know how that mattersConfused

The Beatles AND the Stones.
Yes AND Genesis.
Bach AND Handel.
Mozart AND Haydn.
Emerson AND Wakeman.

In other words: I see no need for either/or.

Interesting critique from electricsilence, though. I don't completely agree that Rick and Keith were just striking attitudes (their playing on KARN EVIL 9 and THE SIX WIVES is very exciting, no matter what they were doing on stage at the time!) but it's definitely sad that they completely ran out of good ideas after, say, 1978. (And THESE are supposed to be two of the most accomplished prog players?) I mean: just look at Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, all of them jazz keyboards players from roughly the same generation. Their careers may have had ups and downs, but (differently from Rick and Keith) they still manage to surprise their fans with highly inspired albums, even nowadays...

Well just look at the solo albums maybe...
Rick Wakeman overdoes Keith Emerson in terms of originalty.
While in the other hand Emerson is a better stage keyboardist,I would not say more experimental but.
...And I give most of my congratz to Wakeman as an artist, although this is one of the most difficult decision polls I have ever been on in Progarchives...I vote Wakeman, but both are extremely talented, and extremely relevant in the history of prog music.

gonna have to go with my all time idol here, wakeman.

electricsilence: there is a lot of truth in what you say, but i don't really agree with "the most embarassing keyboard players in prog" statement. There are many more embarassing ones out there, i.e. Jordan Rudess. He embarasses me to the nth degree.

Hey, they are both geniuses! The whisker goes to the caped one only because Keith never laid a masterpiece like "the 6 Wives of Henry VIII" on an unsuspecting audience. I guess roosters do not lay eggs !

And when will that be?LOL

I voted for Emerson as a "solo" performer, but I like Wakeman in Yes better... but not so much when solo, so Emo wins this
