Topic: Deep Purple Prog or Not Posted: August 04 2005 at 13:16 |
I believe it has been asked before, but is DEEP PURPLE PROG OR NOT?
I personally believe it is and not just the MK1 albuns but every album
they put out in the 70's were prog or at least had prog elements in it
(example: Burn, Stormbringer, Space Truckin, Into the Fire, Gypsy, You
Keep on Moving, Fireball, you name it...)
And if it is Prog, why???... They belong in here...

No, they're not a prog band. They use progressive elements, but quite rarely - and their early albums from the late 60's are merely psychedelic. Space Truckin is a good example for a song with many progressive elements, but songs like that aren't what Deep Purple are famous for ...
All just IMO, as usual.

Well, after a long discussions, Queen joined the Prog Archives. Why not
Purple ? They are progressive at least more than Roxy Music, Queen,
Styx, Radiohead and a lot other bands.

This thread is again going to follow the "Yes it is - No it isn't - Yes it is ..." pattern. It's just opinion vs. opinion (vs. opinion etc.).

My thoughts exactly. As a matter of fact, I'd rather see Purple (one of my all-time favourites) in ProgArchives than Queen, good as they might be. As to whether Purple are prog or not, I voted yes because they definitely have some prog elements in their sound, as listening to Made in Japan will prove. Of course I wouldn't ever dare to say that Smoke on the Water is prog... but then, neither are many of the tracks on the Queen albums reviewed here.

I agree , but that's what makes this archives so cool. hundreds of bands, thousands of posts expressing ones feellings towards a topic.
I find it worth fighting for the inclusion (is this a correct
expression?) of Deep Purple in the ProgArchives... in the name of good
music and democracy

In democracy people vote for theirr leaders, who make the decisions. If their decisions don't please you, the people select another leaders (see -> U.S.A. and Great Britain).
IMO the internet represents more anarchy. I'm not saying its wrong...

Democracy is the right that each and everyone of us has to express our
thoughts, say what's in our minds... its more than a vote. Dont confuse
a Democratic right that is the vote with Democracy which is a larger
issue

lets keep this in mind. Many of the bands that are in the PA were in some
moment in their career, progressive. Queen was added cause their first 3
or 4 albums were considered prog. OK no problem with that, I love
Queen. How do you explain Radiohead? for me the only song that can be
considered progressive is Paranoid Android, but thats just my opinion.
But they are in the PA. Supertramp? Progressive? Classic Rock yeah good
music wonderful composition but prog? Hell why not Dire Straits? they are
in the same line of Pink Floyd (well a litle bit rocker) but they have a lot of
symphonic music.
Why not Black Sabbath? Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is quite progressive. I
recommend it. Rick Wakeman played there, and its not the normal
Sabbath album its even darker than the others almost conceptual with a
lot of atmospheric sounds.
DP have all the elements that make a band progressive:
-A keyboardist that writes classical music (like Wakeman or Emerson)
-Classical trained musicians
-A million of guitar/keyboard duels
-Lyrics about Space travels
-long Jams
-Excelent Musicians (every MK) they produced some of the best music in
rock history
-Epics like Child in Time, Fools, April just to name a few.
-Ok they never recorded a concept album... so what?
In Rock is almost like a one track album with 7 movements in it, that
album is very coerent very strong.
Smoke on the water is not prog neither is We will rock you
Flash is Prog and so is Space Truckin or Highway Star or Burn.
So once again I ask Why is not Deep Purple the next band joining the
Archives? Maybe we should have a poll and see the results.

Making a few progish songs doesn't make you prog. Although(fun fact), they started out as a prog band and made a 180 and did metal/hard rock. I'll bet Lord would have been an excellent prog keyboardist. Very talented man.

Some early Deep Purple might be considered prog but I don't think they should be added. I think Queen should be removed as well.
