Isis
The Flower Kings
Meshuggah

Pure Reason Revolution

Do Make Say Think

Not in order and there are more bands that are amazing that have released stuff in the last 4 years like Oceansize, A.C.T, Riverside, etc., it was really hard for me to narrow it down to 10.

And didn't include Magma and older bands, because well.. simply they aren't modern bandsWink

sort of off topic but I think I read somewhere that Maynard said APC has a reasonably good chance of getting back together at some point in the near future

It never will, alas. Eschew it and focus on quality tunes from bygone days.

Modern eh? Well since i seen alot of others taken band that started out in the 90s i gues the 90s are still modern times and free to shoose bands from it and since it dont say prog bands in the topic and allot of others have taken none prog bands i gues i can take whatever bands i like too, sweet here we go in no order:

Ozric Tentacles
Radiohead
Mostly autumn
Monster Magnet
The Mars Volta
Muse
Tool
System of a down
Van der Graaf Generator (the new power trio lineup feels very modern IMO)
The Soundtrack of our lives (a swe retro-rock band and very good, and pretty much the only swe band i lisen to, modern or not, well they started out in 95 and before that most of the mebers where in another band that started out in the 80s so..)

I have to say im not very good with pure modern bands i usualy go for the classics, and when a modern band i do lisen to realese a new album it usualy go many months before i buy it, i gues i realy need to find and start lisen to more modern bands but there is still so many old great ones i wana get.. i try to mix and get some new and not only old. Smile

Well... they're technically not disbanded, just still on hiatus.  Apparently,  Maynard stated in a Puscifer newsletter (his solo project) that APC is "alive and well" (whatever that means).  Even so, I still don't see them ever making another full length album if they do return from hiatus.

I found a link:

When I think of modern prog, I don't think of Yes and Genesis as some people have posted. For me the obvious delineation between Classic and Modern Prog is " Did the band debut occur in the 70s?"  If yes then they are classic Prog.  If no they are Modern.  This is just my definition and how I've thought of it for years, I suppose that I need a new catagory since my Modern definition covers close to 30 years now but I have no idea what  criteria to use.   But I'll use your definition here

      Marillion
      Porcupine Tree
      Ayreon
      The Decemberists
      Phideaux
      Sigur Ros
      Pendragon
      Mostly Autumn
      Pallas
     Riverside

Here's a list in no particular order of the bands whose new albums I look forward to a lot, though it would be very difficult for me to place them on top of one another, as my musical preferences change frequently:

-Kayo Dot
-Ulver
-Porcupine Tree
-Earth
-Estradasphere
-John Zorn
-Mastodon
-Secret Chiefs 3
-The Sound of Animals Fighting
-Toby Driver
-Radiohead
-Tool
-A whole bunch of modern composers, many of whom don't belong on THIS list as their last "albums" of pieces were released pre-2004

Probably more but off the top of my head, that sounds pretty accurate.

I Modern Music
I'm a reasonable man, get off my case
