So, it appears to be a tie between Gentle Giant and Genesis. Giant had 5 and Genesis has 5 as well. However, it seems like Genesis had a better run, since Trespass and W&W also have 4 stars. GG has Three Friends that has 4 stars too.

How does Gentle Giant have 5 'essentials' while other bands like King Crimson, Camel, and Miles Davis have 3. I mean just because it have a rating of 4.25< does not make it essential. The first 4 ELP albums you could call all essential even though they are less than 4.25 on the point ratings.

Depends how you define "essential". Why are the first four ELP albums "essential"?

They just look like staples of progressive rock. Also, the tracks on them are really good. Its too bad this group is dismissed as pretentious.

The only essential items are food, shelter and water. Haven't we had this ELP discussion recently? If you like them, great, if not, life goes on.

It's the old chestnut of albums by the essential "Big Six" of Prog-Rock. Namely....

ELP
Genesis
Jethro Tull
King Crimson
Pink Floyd
Yes

And these are my own personal choices for the second tier "Big Six" of classic prog...

Barclay James Harvest
Camel
Caravan
The Moody Blues
Procol Harum
Renaissance

Since our opinions are quite influenced by our personal taste, “Essential” is quite subjective, and it will depend on how many people want to label an album in that category.

Yes I think so, but 5 stars is "essential" according to PA and nothing gets rated that high once it has a number of ratings.

Simple case of algorithms: 5 star ratings = "Essential" on the site database. It's nothing to do with ones subjective view, which can't be captured as 'data'

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Let's not have the old "who are the big three/four/five/six?" debate again please.

^Most of these obscure bands (to me) have few ratings. Does it count if all the band members rate it five stars?

Hi,

It's easy to tell that you are an English person!

Very sad ... there was/is a lot more music that is progressive around the world that will never get recognition given your posting.

Oh, yeah, I remember ... we're all closeteers! Wink
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Hi,

That's the problem with the majority of "progressive" music listeners ... they are voting for a "favorite" and do not have a reasonable idea of how good others are.

To me, the greatest sadness of all is that the first list, pretty much ignores anyone from around the world ... well, I got news for you, world music from India, China, Africa and many other places are thousands of years old and do things that our commercial minds can't even conceive ... which suggests that this is not about music at all!

Just a record company smiling and clapping ... they will still milk money out of the dead dogs, to make sure no one else gets a nickel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^ An English language site is very obviously going to be heavily biased towards English/American bands and artists. There is nothing sad about it. You can big up your 'I'm a man of the world' thing all you like but most of us can only cope with a limited number of bands. That's just reality , its not a crime at all. I suppose also scientifically speaking we are 'taught' to recognise certain things from a very young age when our minds are very pliable and its stays with us like it or not. Your ridiculous sneering and condescending attitude is way too much at times. Just back down and stop being such a prat. Please..pretty please?

I am pretty sure there is record deal pressure all around the world and not just in US/UK. A mainstreamer is not going to normally listen to some foreign song from China, they want to hear stuff closer to their country and region. Santana they will listen to, but Santana were formed and probably recorded at San Francisco. Prog Rock and Foreign music is not everything.

not what the thread is about.

The users you quoted were talking about the top 100 which is not about "voting", but reviewing and rating, it's about the most popular and highest rated prog albums. And most albums there deserve the love and appreciation they get.

Sure, people should pay attention to music from other countries and cultures, rarely happens, most people will never listen to music out of their comfort zone, let alone another culture or something totally new and unexpected.

Sure, big record companies are greedy and money come first, true.
