Nice, which actually points out a flaw in my logic - many of these bands havent got an album out yet, so how can we best promote them?

Would it be possible to create an 'Up and coming prog artists of any genre' section on the site ?

I would gladly collaborate with anyone who wishes to do that, seriously !

Having just got into a discussion on another thread, I wondered, how can we best promote unsigned and/or up-and-coming new Prog Bands?

Many bands out there havent even got an albums worth of material yet, but I want ideas on how we can help to give them exposure...

All ideas welcome, go for it!

I think perhaps PA should have a myspace inviting myspace bands to visit the site and to ask them if they would like to be promoted on the site.

Ok : on the opening page, we could have a link to 'Up and Coming artists' that would lead to the said section, just like when you click on any prog category.  In this section, we could post the name of the bands with a short biographical description of the band, and the category they would fit in once signed.  Links to the bands would, of course, be provided, as well as a mp3 song (in accordance with the bands, of course).  We could also dedicate a section of the front page to the 'upcoming bands team pick of the week', with a review there all week long.

To push the thing further, since we are a huge prog site, why not try and develop something with one of the main prog labels, like Inside Out ?  After all, we promote so many albums from them for free, we could do something nice with them, like a porg band contest or something... Win opening spots for bands in different cities, record deal, etc...

What do you think ?

Sounds cool, Eric!
If I were able to I would help collaborate but that is a lot of work to do. But it sure sounds like fun Tongue

First, we should make a 'Upcoming Bands Team' that would include at least one member of every different prog team and someone from the discogs additions team, as well as a few reviewers.  Then we get on with the business.

Maybe there should be a sticked thread in the Prog Music Lounge as well?

Good idea, we could have a page with links to the bands' web sites. The only danger I can see is that we get swamped with bands. I don't know how many up and coming prog bands there are, but we have enough signed bands to contend with at the moment.

The solution would be to engage new people to deal with them (not current collaborators).

My question is how do you help bands without recorded material on a site like this? If the only option is to see them live, it's pretty much a local matter.

Well obviously recorded material is a must, but I honestly think that would be the only requirement. A link to MySpace page that contains music should be enough in my opinion. I think Eric's plans are pretty good.

Samples are fine (and that does qualify as recorded music), but it would still be hard for someone to support a band that isn't playing in their area. I think you need a tangible product to promote. Otherwise, just start a thread.

What about a new sub-forum? Smile

It should be placed in Other Progressive Forum. One thread for each possible new band, filled with weblinks and legal mp3 if any.
