Let me explain!!!  I know that prog is mostly about fantasy or cerebral themes (I've been a fan for over 30 years) but can it be simply romantic, not in a LOVE way ,but in a FEEL GOOD way? Case in point : ``Blood on the rooftops``.IMO this is one of most atmospheric song i've heard .Without being sopppy or pop it does have that reflective tone that makes me feel good.Even thought i dislike the Collins era, this is one of my favourite track from Genesis ( maybe because of Hackett!!! Let me know ). By the way, what does the lyric "The outlook's fine though Wales might have some rain, Saved again" mean? What do you think of this mess? Do you have prog songs that just make you feel good without being prog "certified"? Examples: Bourree(Jethro Tull) Song of the Gulls (KC)Wacko Let me know!

And I repeat:

I've mentioned Neu! '75 in just about every poll ever created. A romantic poll is no different.

Why? 'Seeland'. 'Leb'wohl'. When you hear them, you will know.

Well you need just to check out my avatar and that will take care of the argument. I am a Romantic prog fan. There are tons of material out there , recent and old that fit the mold. There are VAST amounts of highly romantic moods (the sheer passion of Epitath, for example), but some famous guitar solos from Hackett , Latimer, Akkerman, Gilmour etc... are exceedingly full of powerful emotion. The "Soon" section from Gates of Delirium is another case in point . Obviously , the expressions are not always overt ("I Love you babe"  is just not prog) . Iona's music is very romantic as well. And if you are looking for heartache , Fish's "the Thirteen Star" is gut wrenching. If someone wants I would be overjoyed to prepare a list of romantic edged prog . But it might take time there is so much!Wink

why wouldn't it be? And why does this romanticism have to be about feeling good and just plain love? (you seem to run away from the idea....) Why wouldn't prog be allowed to talk about the subject that, whether it's "intellectual" or not, kind of, well, preserves humankind to speak bluntly and as romatic-less as I can???

Just check GENESIS after "the lamb" (with Gabriel they mostly dealt with the cerebral and fantasy issues)... And it's not just the lyrics.. is the music man....What could be more romantic than a song with a beautiful melody with some great atmosphere and some reverb?

But it has to be said: prog in general, though it shouldn't be like this, tries to avoid being romantic.... Maybe the geeks that turn into prog musicians just are dissapointed with romance and focus only on cerebral subjects..LOL

As more examples, check MARILLION... maybe they don't say "love you" but really some music, even if the lyrics say otherwise, is so romantic... Just hearing the start of "Kayleigh" after "pseudo Silk Kimono"...brrrr... spectacular.... romantic, even if it's not romance whatv they're talking about.... just listen DT's Scenes from a Memory... please... there are examples... of course, don't go looking in Mr. Fripp catalogue....

Quote simply romantic, not in a LOVE way ,but in a FEEL GOOD way?

Essentially, yes. My feel-good pieces are usually more rock-based things. Something like The Mahavishnu Orchestra's 'Open Country Joy' is probably the best example. Softer things I often really enjoy, but they don't have the same feel good effect as atrocious air guitar to Focus' Birth or Maneige's Douce-Ameres.

Quote Case in point : ``Blood on the rooftops``.IMO this is one of most atmospheric song i've heard .Without being sopppy or pop it does have that reflective tone that makes me feel good.

Oddly enough, I've always found the song's appeal in its hollowness, and twists on reminiscing. Never been quite feel good for me.

Quote By the way, what does the lyric "The outlook's fine though Wales might have some rain, Saved again" mean?

Basically, the thing being recalled/noted is a weather forecast. It will be fine everywhere else, Wales might have some rain. Presumably 'saved again' suggests some import to a rugby game or whatever was being reminisced about for that sentence.

Here you go, just fast of the top of my skull: music I would prepare when invited a ravishing lady into my love/prog  room:

Romantic prog

1-     Roxy Music – most of their material fits the bill

2-     Genesis- Ripples, Afterglow, Entangled etc….

3-     Barclay James Harvest- most of their material

4-     Blackfield – perhaps a bit melancholic

5-     Camel- most early stuff as well as the fabulous “Ice”

6-     CAP – Pastelli or Lontana Lucia are stunning tracks

7-     Satellite- Beautiful World, Run, Walk Away in Silence =amazing ballads

8-     Collage- Living in the Moonlight

9-     Like Wendy- most of their material is passionate

10- Flower Kings – Stardust We Are , The Truth Will set you Free = love music

11- Gazpacho- Night the album, very sexy

12- Hackett- instrumental stuff is awesome

13- Höstsonaten- beautiful music

14- Iona- most their material

15- La Maschera di Cera /Finisterre- highly romantic prog

16- Loccanda delle Fate- Obviously

17- Magenta- “Envy” off the Seven album

18- No-Man- Bowness’ voice is very romantic-tinged

19- Omni- En Vals de los Duendes is splendid stuff

20- Porcupine Tree- most of their material

21- Renaissance- you bet!

22- Shine Dion- 2 albums

23- Early White Willow- very moody

24- The Strawbs- Hero & Heroine , Ghosts

25- Talk Talk / Mark Hollis- awesome emotional prog

26- Tempus Fugit- both albums are very sexy

27- Willowglass- both albums

28- Marillion- most of their stuff

29- And for a little dab of humor :  Rick Wakeman’s 6 wives of Henry VIII

3 weeks later, she wanted more!

My wife prefer Willie Nelson's Stardust to any prog I might play.  (Not a bad thing, I should add.)

If we're looking for love-based romantic (complete tangent):

Lost - Van Der Graaf Generator is the single most connecting romantic tune I've ever heard, while there are plenty of others available. Just going through five.

1. Lady Fantasy - Camel
2. Still... You Turn Me On - ELP
3. Lovers' Leap (opening/conclusion of Supper's Ready) - Genesis
4. Lady Of The Dancing Water - King Crimson
5. Take Me Back To Doomsday - Colosseum
6. Anything by Uriah Heep, let's be honest ;p

Again, there are a fair few, but I think prog is usually more offbeat and sparse in romantic expressions than the much-maligned mainstream.

Prog isn't really written to be romantic. There still are moments (such as in "Soon" by Yes). I find Harmonium's works to be more romantic, but that's just me, I guess.

You'll never understand that until you understand what "The grime on the Tyne is mine all mine Five past nine." means. Tongue

Oddly enough the first track that comes to mind does have love in the title but is a simple instrumental called With A Great Feeling of Love: Inner Warmth and Feelings of Affinity off an album called Marscape with John Lancaster, Robin Lumley and a few other good progressive musicians many might be familiar with even if they haven't heard the album.

Actually it's buried under the Various Artists (Concept Albums & Themed Compilations) section.  I listed it and reviewed it a while back.  It fits there. L & L's Peter and the Wolf was already there.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Wales (as well as Northern Ireland, and parts of Scotland) usually has rain when the weather's fine in the rest of the U.K....

But the "grime on the Tyne" bit, isn't that just about getting sleepy?
