Topic: PT vs PF Posted: March 22 2007 at 19:00 |
I hate to sound like the sort of person who only chooses PF because
they have been immortalized by time, but in all honesty, PF were more
innovative and revolutionary than PT has been, though PT is also a
great band.

Record companies can impact bands. Its been done before. Rush feel the "pressure" to write shorter songs.

Porcupine Tree is on its way to become one, one of these days. (no pun intended).
Hope their new record company won't make them change even more.... |
it isn't the record companies changing PT, its Steve Wilson's taste in music. He does in fact listen to a lot of metal. Of course he produced some of Opeth's Cds and also he's a huge fan of Meshuggah. He even mentions them in the thank you section in In Absentia: "and to Oliver Badin for introducing me to them [Opeth] and the other Swedish metal gods Meshuggah". I vote PT. They are awesome.

I never was a Pink Floyd fan... Ok, ok, I know I'm a freak because of that but besides Animals, Piper and maybe Division Bell PF albums doesn't make me feel nothing... So my vote goes for Porcupine Tree. I really enjoy their albums even when there's a pinkflydian inffluence but Wilson and partners knew how to take that inffluences and make something new and fresh...

Pink Floyd, for sure. They're far better. The one thing (IMO) PT have going for them (against pf) is the vocal harmonies.

DT and PF are popular. Dream Theater isn't "virtuosity, speed and no more" like much people thinks. They learned Jazz and Classical music. Usually, DT's harmony is too complex. The metters too. Then DT isn't a common band. While PF's musicians have learned Rock and Roll. They composes "pentatonic Prog-Rock". I don't say PF is bad, but I think it isn't great.

By the way Rich, I read your 'Victor' review. ! Great review for an equally great album ! |
Thanks!
You know, I do enjoy that album. It always makes me smile. And Lifeson really didn't get the due praise he deserves, IMO. I believe it shows he could make it as a solo artist, but lets hope this never happens. |
Lifeson RARELY got the praise he deserves, a CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED guitarist, and an even better songwriter... Does that new Rush album appear promising or not ? |
I have had very high hopes for the new Rush CD. I hate to get over excited, but I know, regardless of how much I initially hate it, I will love it. Since Power Windows, it has taken time to get into each release. But now, they all are must haves and each has its own unique flavor.
This new single release seems to be different. I liked it very much from the start because I heard energy in the music. Real, lets have a kick ass time, fun energy. YYZ kind of energy. This is what makes me more excited than ever. Cross your fingers!

OH! Bite your tongue!!! DT is better than sliced bread. |
On a more serious note, I recently took DT's 'Octavarium' from the shelf where it was picking up dust, and to my surprise, I actually liked it this time around, save for two songs : The Answer Lies Within and that god-awful Coldplay parody I Walk Beside You. Other than that I have to admit it's a very fine album.

that's very easy, PF ofcourse, PT are just not good enough to top PF, nor will they ever be. They already had their peak IMO now they're just going downhill

Pink Floyd music scares me into practicing more. That's the only good thing about it. PT by default.

So you base your decision on popularity? Britney Spears is also one of the biggest names in modern music so do you think she is better than PT? And despite their popularity, the Stones and Beatles weren't all that great either. Why say 'Porcupine Who' here? This band has made some really great music and deserves to be better known by the general public than they are. My vote goes to PT. Simply put, better than all of the above
