At the risk of sounding like a broken record, let's keep the criticism constructive, and avoid personal insults. Remember that many of the singers mentioned in this thread are members of bands who are highly revered in these parts.
So far, the discussion appears to have been largely superficial, with people simply saying they don't like a singer's voice. There is a significant difference between someone not singing to your personal taste, and someone singing badly.

I have to agree with Garion81 here. Lumping Lake, I. Anderson and Plant in here isn't right. They may or may not be "good" now, but at one point, they were. I would agree that they're not as good as they once were, though, but they're not the worst by any stretch. As far as Neal Morse goes, the guy can sing, but I too have always felt there was a bit of a boybandish quality to his vocals, which bothers me when I'm listening to V. I don't think he's awful, but his vocal quality isn't exactly my favorite. Now Steve Howe . . . I haven't had the pleasure of really hearing him sing by himself, but I can tell just by the way the Yes backup vocals are that he would not be my cup of tea by any stretch. I have all the respect in the world for the guy as a guitarist and a songwriter, and I would even go as far as to say he's probably my absolute favorite rock guitarist, but as a vocalist . . . Fortunately, he blends alright with Squire and J. Anderson surprisingly well. Latimer from Camel is okay as far as I'm concerned. Of course, you don't really hear him that often, so it's hard to tell. The best vocalist out of that group in my opinion was actually the late Pete Bardens. Listen to "Spirit of the Water" off of Moonmadness if you don't know what I'm talking about. -Topographic

Nick D'virgilo (sp?)--Neal Morse's replacment in Spock's Beard. His voice is lackluster to say the least. Spock's Beard should try and recruit a new vocalist.

So goes Mikael Akerfeldt, bit I'm not complaining! I can stand almost every singer, but the guy from Pavlov's Dog, I'm not fond of. I love Plant, Gilmour, Geddy, Labrie, all the ones people usually don't like for some reason, maybe because my first rock band was Rush...

Strange names on this thread!
ROBERT WYATT IS my # 1 favorite prog singer; he has the most unique voice of them all and is the one who sings with the most emotion, warmth and personality/,the most touching and sensitive!
Just listen to MOON IN JUNE on ''third '' by the softs , or his last magical album '' CUCKOLAND''
RICHARD SINCLAIR is a great pleasure as well;in my top10 i stopped listening to Caravan when he left ; can't stand ''poppy'' Pye Hastings
and....GREG LAKE????????what is he doing here???

Neal Morse for me. Can´t stand his boyband voice style, sorry.
But like other said above, i think that Wyatt's vocals are one of the most unique; just listen As Long as he lies perfectly still from Volume two, what a beauty.

hahahha that is enough to make me choke on my chicken
Dream Theater could be if they made albums that will still be listened
to in 30 years... do you REALLY think that is going to happen. I
didn't think so.. and it's not just the vocalist... it's the music..
which is all the matters...
but that conversersion due to LaBrie is a punchline we hadn't even
thought of at the AR mansion. I'll be chuckling over that the rest of
the night

Please has anybody heard Steve Howe singing?
The guy sounds like an animal being skinned alive, it's horrendous, he shouldn't sing in the shower.
He's a genius with the guitar, but for Fod's sake his voice ia a torture.

Geoff Tate & everyone who sounds like him. Really ! |
Amen! Thank you! Don't get me wrong, I used to really like Tate. But, If anybody sounds even remotely like him(and there's thousands) it makes me wan't to vomit. Any of the operatic type stuff is really a turn off. I'd take Akerfeldt from Opeth without the cookie monster vocals any day over all of these singers. Truly good singers are very rare.

okay: Steve Howe is indeed terrible. Who ever told this guy he could sing???
And I have to agree with those who mention James LaBrie - solely his singing on Ayreon's THE is rather okay.
