It's not complex, it's scales for the sake of making people think it's complex. If you ever listen to college music students practicing, that's what most dream theater solo/instrumental sections sound like.

In the end TOT is the album they wanted to make, I think that it is "polished" BTW. They wanted to make an album with all heavy songs and no ballads, like a Metallica album. Something simple, strightforward and loads of widdly bits. Its out of their system now! The more I here TOT the better it gets. Btw the instrumental track brings to mind Liquid Tension Experiment to me.

TOT contains many nice melodies, they're just not as polished and harder to find than they were on their previous releases. I think that this album was a logical thing for them to do, it's something they really enjoy (at least I get that impression from watching them playing the stuff live). It provides a necessary contrast to SfaM, not in quality, but in that is is less polished, more raw and direct than anything they did before. Symphony X did it with Odyssey, Metallica with St. Anger, DT with TOT ... I think, at least Symhony X and DT succeeded brillantly!

To me it sounds as if they got in the studio turned everything up to 11
and went hell for leather to create the heaviest, fastest music they could. I
enjoy a good sonic onslaught but at least have some respite and melody
thrown in.
They are capable of creating heavy and complex music as we know, but
something you can follow throughout the song has to be in there as well.
Still a great band and great bands are allowed a light blip in their career.

For me TOT was so bad not because of the heaviness, but because it was so boring and uninspiring. It was littered with needless and mindless intrumental sections where the idea seemed to be to create speed and complexity rather than music. I know a lot of people think all of Dream Theater's music is complexity for the sake of complexity, and while i don't completely agree with that for all of the other albums, when it comes to TOT i just can't find anything to dispute that idea.

Originality means nothing to me though. I like the music Dream Theater make. THAT'S what matters to me.

Yeah, I'm afraid that's how much I like DT. I really know every single note off every album and love every single song of theirs. If people don't like they'll have to learn to live with it.
