I don't think this thread is achieving much now. Let's call it a day.

Amen.
Also, Roine Stolt. He has the same forced raspy quality as Morse, but doesn't even pull it off.
And that girl from Magenta. The wife - who is a singer and big fan of
Annie Haslam (whom people compare the Magenta singer to) - came
in when I was trying to ascertain if Seven really was proggier than
Home as had been claimed by some friends and she made a face and said
"Sounds like Dolly Parton fronting Spock's Beard". Yeah. Kinda. Not
good.
There are plenty of lower-tier Prog bands that I've checked out and dropped because of the vocals, though.
I'd say James LaBrie if he'd ever sung anything that slunded even vaguely Prog.
Although why people bash late-period Anderson and Plant, I do not know.
Anderson's skill is in phrasing and timing and he's still spot-on
there, and Plant's voice is better than it ever has been. Ever.

And that's coming from someone who has Björk as an avatar.
Compared to most other Prog lyricists, Jon Anderson stands pretty tall,
mostly because he didn't much go for clear narratives. On the few
occasions when he did, it tended to get really awful.

Robert Plant( Led Zeppelin) just like Greg Lake I love his voice on the zep albums ,

Have you heard Plan'ts lastest album? He sounds great. He doesn't sing like on the Zeppelin albums, but it isn't that kind of music. It's awesome. I vote James Labrie and Jane Relf. Jane could barely find the pitch when she sang on the first Renaissance album. She actually kind of ruined that album for me.

Geddy Lee's voice grows on people....
but James Labrie's voice is absolutely intolerable, almost as intolerable as the rest of Dream Theater's music. Like the crap cherry on top of a feces sundae

We're drifting further from the topic, are we not?
Moody: There's constructive negativity, and there's bashing for the sake of bashing. Guess which one is preferred here.

"Oh, this thread is so negative..." This totally unpleasant consideartions reveals the lack of humour that some peaple get. What's the problem of bashing someone you dislike but is praised by the common sense? the "hate" threads used to be the more fun of them, while some of the "polite" threads usually bores me (except the informative ones).

So, I should of said that I extremely dislike these guys, but because I don't like their sounds of their voices or for any another reason, that does not nessesary means they're bad vocalist. I undestand that now.!!!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, let's keep the criticism constructive, and avoid personal insults. Remember that many of the singers mentioned in this thread are members of bands who are highly revered in these parts.
So far, the discussion appears to have been largely superficial, with people simply saying they don't like a singer's voice. There is a significant difference between someone not singing to your personal taste, and someone singing badly. |
Ok, I get your point and you are absolutly right. I shouldn't mix my personal taste by saying that they are bad singer and insulting them with uncostructive criticism. I know I went a little off and I apolgy if I have offended my fellows prog friends because they way some of you guys reponded I feel that I did. I was just trying to be funny. Soory
I get now point like some of you guys said:
Kazanski:
it should say 'vocalist i don't like or such rather than worst vocalist...' good or bad it's all subjective you know... and the comments are quite nasty either...
darkmatter:
Ugh, I hate negative threads like this, they only bring out the worst in people and they aren't constructive most of the time.
Next time I post a topic I'll take in cosideration these points.
We're all a big family expanded in the whole world. A very rare family these days in a world of rap and Pop and Punk. (I don't want to say that prog is the greatest 'cause music is a matter of a taste. my whole family dislike prog.) I Think we are bless people because we apriciate prog these days and I am so happy that I've found this family that enyoy the music that I extremely love. I had found what i was looking for.
I know that members of any family aren't always perfect and they're clones of each others, but we have to respect individuals tastes and choices in a respectful way.
For instance I noticed that alot of you guys dislike Bands RUSH and Dream Theater, but to me I can't get enough of these two bands. I simply love them. Get my point?

I think Clive Nolan's singing on the Shadowland albums is rather painful at times...

Ian Anderson never was a great vocalist (like Plant, Gillan etc). In on of the interviews Ian explained that he started to sing only because others in the band sang even worse than he. But Ian's voice was always instantly recognizable - both in early Tull and now. In case of Ian "individuality" is a key word, so I don't see the reason for him to stop. |
Anderson was never an ACROBATIC vocalist (though he may have been an acrobatic performer ) but in my view his way of singing on BENEFIT, MINSTREL and BURSTING OUT (to name just a few) is as enjoyable as anything in prog!
As for Richard Sinclair and Robert Wyatt: I just can't get enough!

Well said Sir! I love Howe's playing, but find his solo albums a pale shadow of his work with Yes. But his voice! Surely he has enough contacts in the music world to hire a decent singer for his material?
Funnily enough, I have always been a big Yes fan. Since '74 in fact. I am listening to Topographic Oceans as I type this. But I have never rated Anderson as highly as others do. He often sounds like he is straining to reach certain notes, and I am not a lover of his phrasing at times either. I certainly never think of him as 'angelic' as some have said.
But they were a great band! (Up to Drama that is!)
