All musicians listed are simply gods....... and the stuff is superb. I'd also add Niacin; but overall is a good and essential list.

I know Miles Davies is THE jazz-man and Return to Forever made some remarkable stuff; I also love Weather Report and a couple of Holdsworth's solo efforts. Yeah, I really like jazz fusion!

But I definately stay, all the time, with the marvelous Mahavishnu Orchestra, leading the superb John McLaughlin and the impressive Billy Cobham. Even lovin' a lot of other fusion-oriented stuff, I didn't think twice before voting for Mahavishnu. My favourite jazz-fusion band. Big%20smile

Where did you pick up on that false idea, jazz fusion (and labelled jazz fusion) had been around since at least before 1965 e.g. Joe Harriott & John Mayers Double Quintet's Indo-jazz fusion and one of Larry Coryell's early band Free Spirits

My gut instinct immediately tells me my favorite is PAT METHENY. Although his music can be woolly at times, he has recorded more albums I love than any other artist you mention.

This isn't meant to diminish the importance of Weather Report, Herbie Hancock etc. And if you've ever bumped into any of my reviews, you'll know that I particularly enjoy Bill Bruford's Earthworks...

But Pat has given me so much pleasure... Moreover, he's the greatest INSTRUMENTAL PROG composer / soloist of the last twenty years or so!

I chose Billy Cobham because of his album live in europe with George Duke it is really amazing

Absolutely, jazz (rock) fusion is one of the few old prog sub genres that has truly progressed. While classic recordings are further apart than the early 70's  they most certainly come around. Jon Newey (editor of Jazzwise magazine and compiler of the long discography at the rear of Stuart Nicholson's essential book on the subject Jazz Rock A History), compiled an essential 10 albums for Mojo Collectibles magazine. He came  up with some obvious and undeniable classics from the 60's and 70's : Emergency, Bitches Brew, Third, Inner Mounting Flame, Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy, Mysterious Traveler, Spectrum. He thought it essential to include a couple of later classics. He asked a number of people including myself, although in the end  went for Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech. I suggested and vry much stick to:

Hellborg/Shrieve/Buckethead's Octave of The Holy Innocents (but avoid the remixed version issued a couple of years ago) and Conrad Schrenk & Extravaganza's Save The Robots  - which have remained favourites for over a decade. The latter is regularly nominated the best album of the 90's by those who have heard it - which reflects the problem of spotting "classic" albums over the last 20 years with their relatively obscurity and release through small labels and only in a few countries.

As to personal classics more than 20 years old:

Bruford's Feels Good To Me ((in my top 3 since the late 70's)
Tony Williams Lifetime: Turn It over (perhaps the first album I owned to which the term jazz rock was attached)
The New Tony Williams Lifetime: Believe It - great to see Holdsworth and Pasqua play a few of those tunes in London in May.
Allan Holdsworth's early solos: Road Games and IOU (perhaps because of the vocals, and this was the peak of Holdsworth's composing period IMHO)
Pat Metheny Group: American Garage

Don't have much Hellborg.  Love Octave of the Holy Innocents.  He really shines on that Mahavisnu Orchestra DVD.


Strictly Soft Machine Legacy - Marshall, Etheridge, Hopper and Theo Travis more than adequately standing in the shoes of the late Elton Dean - new for sure and it is dynamic record, I guess with a something to prove.

Picked up on the Latvitz record School Of The Arts with the amount of praise heaped on it at Fusenet - now I have it I too can say it is a goodie. Largely unplugged (apart from three tunes guesting Jerry Goodman and John Patitucci plugging in a couple of times) it is an upbeat record with musicians clearly enjoying themselves and getting the message across.

The new Hellborg Art Metal, has the bass maestro exploring more new fusions; jazz rock, Indian and heavy metal - and to most it work very well - Jazzwise has the only negative comments with a 1* star rating - I would would say it is at the other end of ratings spectrum.
