It took the blending of "classical" music and rock to a new level, and flushed the shredders out of the woodwork - but I don't think it was nearly as great a milestone as "Vincebus Eruptum", "Spooky Two", "Black Sabbath", "In Rock", "On Parole", "Back In Black", "Ace Of Spades", "Heaven and Hell", "The Number of the Beast", "Black Metal", "Hell Awaits", "Scum" or any of Metallica's first 5 albums (to name but a few!).

There were some great ideas on "Rising Force" - but it's only the "shredding" style, or sweep-picking that has lived on - none of the musical ideas have filtered through to the mainstream, and Yngwie didn't invent that style or even do it first; he just popularised it - which is no mean feat. Listen to Steve Vai on "Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch" to hear some truly dynamite guitar work that predates "Rising Force" by half a decade.

What's even more important: Malmsteen didn't evolve/progress. Not even a tiny bit. Vai on the other hand went through the roof ...

I highly recommend his latest two albums (Ultra Zone and Real Illusions: Reflections) and his work with the Metropole Orkest. Couldn't we introduce a new category "Progressive Shred" in the archives? Or at least consider Vai as Fusion and add him there ...

Now I understand Malmsteen's true contribution as discribed by you. Thanks, great information!

How true, I've always felt Rising Force is all you need.

I have Real Illusions. I didn't like it upon a casual listen, I'll give it another chance...

Uriah Heep, Budgie, Black Sabbath and Motörhead.

Almost forgot Autopsy, Sepultura, Immolation, Carcass, Napalm Death and My Dying Bride.  Well, I don't listen them very often anymore...

In the Woods - "HEart of the Ages"

Seeing you guys mention Raven brings back memories.I remember buying Stay Hard as a teenager around 84-85 and loving it,and trying desperately to find their earlier albums. Finally found Rock Until You Drop,Wiped out and All for One.

And I was very surprised to see no one but me even mention Armored Saint, one of the best metal bands of the early 80's.John Bush had an awesome voice.

You guys have a severe lack of melodic black metal and power metal on your lists. Jus ta lot of prog metal/thrash metal/hard rock. I'll go with something a little different, although this isn't quite what my actualy list owuld be...throw a Metallica and Judas Priest album in here somewhere.

1. Opeth - Blackwater Park
2. Kamelot - The Black Halo
3. Kamelot - Epica
4. Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon
5.
Blind Guardian - Imaginations From The Other Side
6. Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse
7. Helloween -
Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II
8. Nightwish - Oceanborn
9. In Flames - The Jester Race
10. Iced Earth -
Something Wicked This Way Comes

Ohhh boy, I'm gonna get killed for having Dimmu Borgir and In Flames on their...hehe.

See my CD collection is split into three parts: prog (probably the biggest), prog metal (big), and metal (as big as prog metal). Soooo...I'm a big metal head too. The growling and screaming in Dimmu Borgir took some time, but their music reminds me much of Opeth, as in (with lesser frequency) they'll suddenly bust into this crazy like classical or dramatic section with WONDERFUL vocals...then go crazy again.

"Classic" Heavy Metal? I'll bite, even though I'm more into the extreme sub-genres, normally ones with organic production, flowing compositions, tending towards loose ambient rather than headbanging, aggresso-fodder.

Some great Classic stuff:

Judas Priest - Stained Class
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Black Sabbath - S/T
Black Sabbath - Sabotage
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Angel Witch - S/T
Iron Maiden - Killers
Fates Warning - The Spectre Within
Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian
Helstar - Nosferatu
WASP - The Crimson Idol

Well, that was 11, in no order.

10.Double Live Gonzo- Ted Nugent

As you can see I've picked a few live albums, for the groups concerned they are near- perfect anthologies.

Good list Tony, especially Montrose. About the only things I changes are Sabbath and Scorpions and maybe Ted Nugent's first instead. Maybe add Lone Star's first and Led Zep II.
