Mike,
Gentle Giant and Opeth would definitely not be in my list of top 5 ROCK bands: |
Don't you consider Opeth and Gentle Giant to be rock bands?

Whitesnake made one of the finest Blues/Rock/Metal albums EVER:
1987
|
and they also had a guitarist with the name of Janick Gers

No, not really. I really try to distinguish between prog and non-prog, with prog-related in between. Opeth are IMO pure Prog Metal, and Gentle Giant "Classic Prog", at least their 70s albums (which are all I know of them).

ok, I've been lurking, time to make an uncontroversial post. Hi =P
1. King Crimson
2. Gentle Giant
3. Fantomas
4. Ulver (not yet listed here; however, they've broken free of post-black into their own entity)
5. Eloy
I like all the classic seventies bands, though, apart from maybe ELP and Floyd.. and even they have worthy work.

Delirium Cordia is my favourite Fantomas release so far, possibly the
best thing that Mike Patton has ever put out! Although I'm still to
hear the Maldoror album, his collaboration with Merzbow.
As for Mars Volta, I'm following their work with interest.. if they can
keep putting out such cohesive concept albums, they might end up as my
favourite band in around ten years..

If you don't find this thread interesting, then make it interesting. There's no need to run off and create a sarcastic thread of your own, just to mock this one. What's the point in that? So come on, say something really fascinating for us.

But they do belong to the rock family, as opposed the the jazz or classical families. Out of the entire rock family, which incudes prog, metal, classic rock, electronica, etc, which are your five favourite bands?

That's impossible to tell. You can check out my last.fm page to see which bands I listen to the most ... but I can't name 5 bands.

Fair enough. It's just that out of many years of listening to music, these five bands have consistently stood out for me. I'm like you with regards to other bands - there are too many to list and it all depends on what sort of mood I'm in.

Cream, King Crimson, Hawkwind, Uriah Heep & Napalm Death
Difficult! I tried to get something from all kinds of rock I listen. This time I'll concider that folk isn't rock.
