No-one voted for "Light my Fire" so far? The chromatic guitar solo of Robbie Krieger alone makes it very proggy!

The intro from Spanish Caravan is based upon a 'granainas', a flamenco piece (like a bulerias or a sevillanas), Robbie was also an accomplished flamenco guitarplayer  . Another great example how progressive The Doors were .. ..!!

I have phoned two flamenco record shops in order to trace the roots of the intro of Spanish Caravan by The Doors: parts of the flamenco guitar intro are based upon a 'granadinas' but the main lines and interplay between guitar and keyboards are almost literally derived from Asturias by Isaac Albeniz. Both owners of the record shops emphasized that the Spanish guitar music composers were influenced by the flamenco guitar music.

Interestingly that piece of music by Albeniz was composed for piano and not for guitar.

Albeniz could look into the future, I am sure he wrote it for Ray Manzarek his organ  !

I love the Doors - visited Jim's grave in Paris when I was there (Pere Lachaise cemetary) - I voted for 'The End' - BUT I can't ever see them on here though

In the early Eighties I have visited Jim's grave too in Paris (from the entrance to the grave, follow the graffity arrows with 'Jim'!), I seems that a few years ago his bust was stolen!

Tough choice. The  End and When the Music is over are maybe proggier but my favourite is Riders on the Storm.

The Soft Parade. It's just overall insane, and the lyrics are profound and bizarre, yet amazingly insightful and deep, and everything you could ask for of a prog song.

The songs "The Soft Parade" and "Celebration of the lizard/Not to touch the earth" are prog songs by every possible definition of the term, except they were written by non-prog band.

All the other songs mentioned in the poll are at least somewhat proggy, besides "Spanish Caravan", you forgot to mention "Unknown Soldier" and "L'America".And entire "An American Prayer" album.

Check their latest works, previously unreleased, when Ray swapped Vox for Hammond. And "Whiskey, Mystics and Men", utilising mandolins and accordions.

They are not prog enough for PA, but they are proto-prog in my book.

Amongst the main candidates, in my opinion, are: "Riders on the Storm", "The Soft Parade", "Light my Fire", "When the Music's Over". The progressive spirit soars above many others as well... But I have to vote for "The End" (it doesn't mean, though, that it's my favourite The Doors song).
