Amongst the big ones, Rush, Marillion, KC with A.Belew... I've given up these ones. I can't stand The Wall, despite I love PF. CTTE and In the Court are amongst my all-time classcics. But since prog is not really a genre, I'm not surprised about those extreme opposite feelings.
Love and Peace.

^ Either you are refering to Adam and Eve by The Flower Kings or Tha Masquerade Overture by Pendragon.

I'm sure it would be far easier for Tony R to list the bands he does like!

Of the major prog bands who I have listened to extensively:

King Crimson do nothing for me as a whole. Yes, I like odd tracks, who wouldnt with a band with such an extensive catalogue. However because they are part of the Classic Prog scene I always feel slightly guilty for not appreciating them.

ELP are a slightly different case for me as initially I liked them but now I have grown up I find them almost unbearably pretentious. I would be embarrassed if a friend walked in on me whilst I was listening to one of their albums!!

Jethro Tull - too "Hey Nonnie Nonnie" for me. I just cannot find one redeeming feature.Their music seems to go nowhere, slowly.

Gentle Giant -
what the heck are they supposed to be? Those bizarre vocal harmonies, and songs about nothing I can understand. No,I have tried and failed to "get" these guys.

VDGG -
eek! A combination of all the above. Hammill's vocal delivery drives me potty, the music is ponderous and dreary. Too "old-fashioned".....?

What a collection of nonsense statements.

I can easily confess that I hate Selling England By The Pound but love Foxtrot.

I sort of hate Genesis, but I like to listen to some of their albums. Their overall sound is too square to me, and Gabriel's voice is sometimes a nightmare. Yet I love the voice of Derek Shulman and Colin Goldring, and there a lot of similarities between Gabriel and them.

Obviously the difference that defines hate/love is made of very small details.

Thats the way to goWink, I thought the same with Can, I just didn't get the Kraut rock thing at first but I stuck with them, It's taken me months of repeated listens but finally I got them. I have the same approach with traditional Jazz and some pre Rock music, since after all my generation is rock based. But hanging in there and not giving uop is really rewarding in the end.
I can understand that CTTE may be hard for some with the heaped expectations of it being the no1 album on this website, and then being somewhat dissapointed. Personally I think CTTE is overated I don't think the 20 minute title track is the best epic ever, I prefer Gates of Delerium, Awaken and the first two movements of Tales of Topog than CTTE. So I understand if it isn't the greatist album in your eyes, personally I think their are albums by other artists that have made albums just as good as that, so I'd take the poll with a grain of salt.Wink

70's. Just ELP and Rush. I think I've given them both a good try.

Edit: and Eloy. No chance to ever get over those vocals.

The progbands (metal and neo) I like from the 80's 90's and the 00's are not too many I'm afraid. Given up on far too many to mention.

Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
Don't believe in me

Can't you take a differing opinion? I see nothing nonsensical about Tony R's views on these bands, and I love all of them, except ELP (whom I like still).

I'm not a big fan of Yes or Genesis, I love the odd song, such as 'And You and I' or 'Supper's Ready', but on the whole Yes tends to sound a bit shallow (with little in the way of a 'toungue-in-cheek' factor to redeem it) and Genesis a bit clumsy.

Also Magma and Can failed to impress me as much as they were supposed to.

It's simple: I like football, but only what I consider to be football at the highest level, therefore I don't watch the Polish league, for example. And similarly, Tony doesn't watch football teams he doesn't like - he only watches Rush... er, that is Bolton WanderersLOL.

We once had a thread where we compared prog bands to football teams and I said Real Madrid was Asia...

it isnt nonsensensical for me to say "they do nothing for me as a whole" that's a statement about my tastes. If they are different to yours then I cannot help that.
