Topic: Best Ending of a Song? Posted: June 22 2006 at 00:05 |
just off the top of my head ...
i really love the ending to ELP's 'Endless Enigma Pt 2' from Trilogy album.
there are many others though. someone mentioned hell's kitchen and i can agree with that. also neal morse's "?" album ends wonderfully and so does spock's "V" album (the greatest nothing)!!!
PROG ON!!

if you want to look at a song that has two movements and say that the second movement is the ending or sort of a means to an end; Tool's Wings for Marie Prt.2 (10,000 Days), is an excellent ending to a flwless peice of music

Maybe it's not fully prog but the best ending is that of mc Arthur park by Richard Harris. Go, make fun of it.

Eh, I think it's just me. A lot of people like the actual fade to "Supper's Ready," and I'm just a stubborn coot who can't warm up to it (hah). I do agree that ending it on the 'Jerusalem' line would be weirder than the fade they use already, as they should (IMO) keep the guitar lines going past that. Also, the attempt at a 'fade' on the live versions, notably the Archive, seems like just a gradual softening, but yeah, it is weird.

Great choice . Howe's playing is ecstatic.

That's what especially does it for me. "Siberian Khatru" also has been moving increasingly faster in terms of tempo by the end, and it makes sense (to me anyway) that such an overdrive should end with a fadeout that makes listeners want more.

Listen carefully to Hackett's playing through the fade. It is a fabulous finish reminiscent of Siberian Khatru.
|
I really like Hackett's work at the end, which is indeed fabulous; I always loved the way he'd work with sounds. My problem with Supper's Ready is how it has a loud, monumental, and appropriately slow ending, but it seems like it should have a grand ending note (i.e. "The Fountain of Salmacis"), rather than a fade.

I like the fade out ending, ... it seems fitting... Ive read a comment that they should have ended it on 'Jerusaleeeeeem' ... but that would just sound wierd... However, the fade out ending does sound a wee bit strange live... maybe they just dont take long enough to drag it out or something... but on the studio version it is a great ending.

i think the ending of dream theater's hell's kitchen (falling into infinity) has one of the best endings in prog rock
the ending is very epic and beautiful. it also sounds very symphonic and it gives me goosebumps

my favorite at the moment is
Way Of Life- Gentle Giant
from the in a glass house album
the last three mins. are purely musical bliss...it begins with a very symphonic repitition of the melody of the second half of the song (one of those"THEY MENT TO DO THE WHOLE THING THIS WAY" moments
the symphonic part is pleasant and relaxing...then suddenly some of the most haunting. yet simplistic organ carries the listener out of the song...just stunning

I love the ending of "Counting Out Time" from Genesis TLLDOB - Gabriel's despairing "Without you mankind handkinds through the blues" - very funny and very poignant at the same time

Ending of The Musical Box is indeed one of my favorites. But I
agree with mentioning also Chamber of 32 doors as a favorite Genesis
ending.
I like the end of Ciclos by Canarios where we hear the voice of God who is a bit disappointed (at least, that's my impression)

The end of "Harold the Barrel" is the most clever one on Genesis discography. The strongest would be the end of "The return of the giant hogweed". Both on the best Genesis album from that period.

they play a melody line, and then jam along with it for a few minutes, while it builds to a big climax!
