Whistler-- I'm actually kinda glad Meddle kept coming up as a record to hear, because it's usually Dark Side, Animals, Ummagumma, ad nauseam. Those *are* great records but it's nice to know some people still stick up for Medal...I mean Metal...I mean Meddle. |
I'm on this despicable crusade with my art rock right now, where I'm listening to albums I bought over the summer one week at a time, and Meddle's week came up. Everyone asks me, "whatchu listin' to?" "Meddle, Pink Floyd." "...Pink Floyd's not metal!" And I...hmm. I guess this isn't a very interesting story after all.

Well, the topic is "The album that disappointed you heavily" (I already said that it was Under Wraps by Jethro Tull), but in order to be heavily disappointed one (usually) has to have any expectations on an album (high ones, mostly). There are some albums that I feel certain degree of disappointment about them, but it's not so heavy. First of all, these are the first five albums by ELP -- I liked them, but after some time lost any interest to them. Then, Close to the Edge and Foxtrot. I'm not disappointed by them since I listened to them without any expectations. I just wonder, why Close to the Edge (which is not a bad album by any means) is considered number one Prog album (for me it's just a good Yes album; the group has the better ones, in my opinion), and why Foxtrot (which also considered as one of the best Prog albums) sounds for me like an album without any interesting tune.

Fassbinder-- I know what you mean about CttE and though I happen to love it, it was after getting a bit bored with 'Fragile' and 'Yes Album'. As far as Foxtrot goes, I think alot of it has to do with 'Supper's Ready'...you just can't really beat that.

The Mar's Volta's "Francis the Mute". Omar's much better at playing guitar than he is at editing/producing. Luckily, he/they more than made up for that mis-step with the new album

1. GOING FOR THE ONE. Wakeman's much-trumpeted return to the Yes fold! A noisy and chaotic album, far less original than the incredible RELAYER.
2. Wakeman's own RHAPSODIES. After the fairly good CRIMINAL RECORD, we were all waiting to see if he could come up with another great instrumental album. Instead, we got this absolute disaster. As far as I know, it is still unavailable on CD - and for a good reason.

Counterparts! God do I hate it! I think I was in the pinacle of my Rush-fanatism when I got it, but after the first listen...such crap! And I tried and tried and tried...and now that I think it over its because of this album I stoped liking Rush as much as I used to...

DT - When Dream and Day Unite
the only album i hadnt heard from them, as i expected greatness, i got a bad vocalist, bad production, terrible bass sound, lack of punch in the guitars, and one amazing instrumental.

I share that opinion. For a while after I discovered them, they were
the best I'd ever heard, but I quickly lost all interest in them.
Weird... Can't really say they disappointed me though...
Another album (I've already posted a couple in this thread) that
disappointed me a little is Tool's Lateralus. I really liked 10,000
Days, but so far, I can't say the same thing about Lateralus.

just a few albums that come to mind....
- "Yes - Open your eyes" was a huge disappointment for me. When I bought it I was expecting a lot and I got anuninspired pop record instead
- "GTR" same thing, After I heard Hackett and Howe formed a band, I couldn't wait to hear it. It turned out to be full of accessible aor. I learned to appreciate the musicianship and some of the tracks later on but I had expected a more progressive record.
- "k2 Book of ...." It's not a bad album but I expected something that would have some similarities with UK. Apparently it held more infuences of Genesis. In any case, it is not the masterpiece some reviewers think it is, still an enjoyable record though...
- "Genesis - Calling all stations" : I was expecting a return to form but the album sounded like a bland Banks/Rutherford solo project. I did like Ray Wison's voice on "The lamb lies down" in the subsequent tour though.
I'm one of those strange guys that wasn't impressed by the second Riverside album. I loved the debut album but the second album is more standard prog metal and I really think they can do better than that.
- The last ELP studio album is really dreadful. I wasn't very keen on their comeback album either but I did give it a lot of turns, while "On the hot seat" was a major disappointment, another commercial aor album from a band that is capable of so much more. Eventhough the first track is splendid, the rest of the album really is a letdown. Fortunately there's that wonderful bonus track.

FISH "Return To Childhood" -- Live (I have read that`s great live album but it was a HUGE dissapointment)
Genesis "Calling All Stations" (boooooooooring)
Asgard "Arkana" (it`s messy for me despite what other people say)
Tomas Bodin "I am" (I don`t know really why I don`t like this album but I had big expectations and this album let me down)
Derek Sherinian "Blood Of The Snake" (maybe I need to listen to it a few times more)

Ive only really been dissapointed in an album twice, Dream Theater's Octavarium is easily their worst album and Yes Close To The Edge is just plain dull. With Yes' CTTE, I was expecting somethingto rival Foxtrot or Animals, but instead I got a cure for insomnia.

Radiohead's "OK computer"
I had heard so much about this band and thought "Creep" was very
interesting so I expected to be blown away since so many reviewers
expressed their opinion that this one was their apex. It was
nothing like what I expected. The drums in particular were
lethargic and pedestrian at best and that's always my starting point
with any band. I want to be moved by the music I listen to.
I like exploratory and cutting-edge music but this cd just didn't do
anything for me.

For me it has
to be Duke. I was 13 when And Then There Were Three came out and
although it's not a classic it still has a definite prog feel to it at
times whereas Duke was just a stream of pop drivel with one good
instrumental. Works was also quite awful with Greg Lake's side being
the wussiest sentimental rubbish imaginable and the whole album nothing
like ELP had done before. I also agree with those who nominated
Tormato, to go from the majesty of Awaken, the stunning beauty of Turn
Of The Century and the bombastic brilliance of Parallels to a feeble
offering with Rick Wakeman foresaking proper keyboards for an
instrument called the Birotron is simply amazing. Save The Whale and
Circus of Heaven are two of the worst songs I've heard in any style
whatsoever. Three once marvellous bands reduced to such incompetence
and lack of imagination or having any idea at all what their fans would
like to hear is really quite stunning.

ELP's Black Moon. I just couldn't get through a single song.
It left such a bad impression on me that I didn't bother to see them when they toured, which I heard was a phenomenal show.

King Crimson' Islands. I knew it wasn't rated above four stars, but I'd seen a bunch of people say it was one of their favorites. I poped it in the CD player expecting an interesting album, but instead I heard one of the most boring albums in my life featuring one of the most annoying vocalists I'd ever heard.

King Crimson - In the wake of poseidon (a pale shadow of the 1st album)
Genesis - The Lamb (I absolutely hate it)
Yes - Going for the one (Yes and prog generally were dead in 1977, and it shows. CTTE is also far from being a masterpiece, it's a 3 stars album for me)
Jethro Tull - Thick as a brick (a masterpiece.... why? Only the first 8-10 minutes are good. The rest is boring)
Camel - The snow goose (booooring!)
Strawbs - Bursting at the seams, Hero and heroine (bad followup to the good 2 previous albums)
Rush - .... well, I never had any big expectations of them anyway :-)
That's all for now. I don't mean to offend anyone, this is really what I feel. There are plenty of much worse albums, but I either didn't hear them because of their bad reputation or I didn't have big expectations of them anyway.
