One of my favourite bands but, as much as I respect Foxton and Buckler, I'm not too sure what they can achieve without Paul Weller.

Mod-rockers The Jam are to reform and tour but without frontman Paul Weller.

Bassist Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler have not toured together in 25 years but will play a 20-date tour from 2 May, beginning in Oxford.

The Jam sold over 14 million albums worldwide before their 1982 split. The new tour will feature a mix of old hits and new material.

Paul Weller, who has had a successful solo career, has been invited to join the tour but has not commented.

Foxton said: "This tour is deliberately intimate and something of a warm-up to our own material to launch later.

"The plan is for us to get close to the fans, have some fun and then follow with a larger tour in the autumn."

Buckler added: "Paul Weller has a fantastic solo career and is one of the UK's most talented songwriters.

"Paul is always welcome to join us for the reunion, but until then, we've got a tour and a new album to do!"

The tour will take in venues across the UK such as Aberdeen, Nottingham, Liverpool and Guildford, before ending in Portsmouth on 27 May.

The album is planned for release in the autumn.

I'd say there is not much point to reform without Paul Weller.
 
No matter how much I like Foxton & Buckler, The Jam is Paul Weller
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Quite.   "Deliberately intimate" is a nice euphemism! 
 
Based on Foxton's previous songwriting contributions to The Jam, I doubt the prospect of new material is likely to excite too many people...still I suppose he might yet surprise us.

I've always rsated Foxtons songs very highly. He just wasn't prolific like Weller. Great bassist and singer too.

I've always loved Smithers-Jones, especially the band version (as opposed to the string version). I assume they'll have a guitarist/singer instead of Weller but haven't yet seen who it will be.

I am wondering how Weller will actually not try to stop this use of the name The Jam. I am not so sure he agrees with this reformation.

"Intimate" being a euphemism for "small and sparcely attended" I guess...

I wonder if Weller will let them play any of his songs? If not, they'll have a pretty short set list.

As Chopper says their concerts could be brief. It reminds me of when Nigel Tufnell left Spinal Tap and they realised their setlist was down to "a cosy ten minutes."
