I'm a mad man if I suggested John Cale for PA inclusion?

Is the "Academy in Peril" ?
![]() I'd say he's a better & more obvious fit than VU or Lou Reed ... maybe we do a little trick and post the suggestion as a 2 for 1 - John Cage/John Cale ??? Edited by debrewguy - January 11 2009 at 11:15 |

No; not crazy at all. I've been meaning to get HoboSapiens.
And I really like John Cale and Terry Riley's Church of Anthrax: http://www.progreviews.com/reviews/display.php?rev=jctr-coa Incidentally, Terry Riley would make for an interesting addition, methinks. |

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Not at all In another thread or poll concerning possible additions to PA, maybe a few months ago, I voted for a few bands or artist including Velvet Underground, with the remark that John Cale is more PA-compliant than Lou Reed.
I bought a copy of The Academy in Peril a few weeks ago. This album meanders from rather classical to sort of RIO. Music for a new Society is one of my all-time favourite albums, but that is not a prog indication, just personal taste. Paris 1919 is also excellent, even if it is not a prog album.
To cut a long story short, I won't go as far as saying Honi Soit qui Mal y Pense to anyone who is opposed to the inclusion of John Cale in PA, but the idea makes me enthousiastic. Edited by someone_else - January 11 2009 at 14:25 |

I think John (Easy Money) would be very happy with the addition. However, where do you suggest he should be added?

I am all for the inclusion of John Cale, at least as prog-related. but since I am usually off (from 4 suggestions two were rejected and one is, after over a year, still pending), what do I know?

The category/ genre that I think is better for John Cale (from what I understand) would be Avant Garde POP. Since it is not a genre of PA... Prog related is good! |

Seriously NO kidding, the idea of an Avant-pop musical genre is fantastic. What other artists would there be? I'd say Bjork fits there, too. Possibly AIR and PJ Harvey?

I personally believe Cale has fewer prog credentials than comparable characters like Bowie or Captain Beefheart, even though Cale HAS dabbled in avant-garde, he HAS composed a couple of "classical" soundtracks and he HAS played with Phil Collins!
On the other hand, he's a superb artist and I love some of his albums to bits (especially PARIS 1919 and FEAR) so I won't be sad if he appears here. Aren't Cale's collaborations with Nico (THE MARBLE INDEX and DESERT SHORE) proggier than his own solo work? P.S. Late last June I suddenly saw John Cale cycling through my street. (Of course he was dressed in black and wore Velvet Underground-style sunglasses!) |

Good calls on both counts but John Cale more so and would fit P-R nicely.

That John Cale is an Art Rock artist of some note with several forays into Prog and "experimental music" justifies his inclusion into Prog Related IMO, but I'm a big fan (and therefore excuse (ie abstain) myself from the decision process).

I think P-R is the only place for him to be considered. I'll formerly ask the Admin team to consider his inclusion.

I think Jos has goit Cale coined best. Being avant-garde is one thing
I don't see how we could keep him away from prog related, but then again, doesn't this open the door to

"And I say no no no" Ups, this is a line from a song of Lou Reed (from the album Berlin).
I think prog related is so wide we can put in anybody we want. I know some of his albums and like some of his work so I am not against it (the opening line was a joke). However, I will strongly support the inclusion of Lou Reed and VU in the same sub genre. Lou Reed made some awsome songs.
