Voted for Fripp from this list since I was asked about "best" (would have gone with Hackett if asked about favourite) but my pick would be Mc Laughlin though like somebody else pointed out w.r.t Holdsworth, he's a fusion jazz guitarist. I got Remember Shakti's Saturday Night in Bombay album a week back and am comprehensively blown away. Many people here may not be familiar with the names of the Indian musicians who performed in that recital but they are really weighty names for me and that McLaughlin was so completely at home in their midst is stunning. I have since been telling anybody who did or didn't care to hear that said performance was ten miles or so from my place and I missed it then because I wasn't at all into serious music of any kind.

Robert Fripp followed by Gilmour then Zappa. Here's another way of putting it:
3. Zappa
2. Gilmour
1. Fripp

Adrian Belew could hold his own, I think.
Anyway, I went with the majority with Fripp. I really do find him to be the most interesting guitarist in Prog, and love to watch him play. I'm a bit of a fanboy, actually.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I observed before. It can be much like that with music for me; immersed in experiencing the moment.

1. Zappa 2. everyone else, but seriously this is a hard poll. I'd have to say Howe is #2 and Fripp is #3

Would have liked to see Roine Stolt and Guthrie Govan on the list (check out his solo album) but from this list, I had to go with Gilmour first and Steve Howe second then Fripp third. Zappa's playing never really evoked much emotion in me, I know I might get hate for that, but eh, oh well!

Hard to say since all of these guitarists are good in their own way, but I just love Gilmours airy guitar sound. (If they would count Queen as prog I would choose Brian May)

How strange. For me, he's probably the worst.

The guitar work has never really stood out for me when I have listened to King Crimson. I enjoy them more for their drums and percussion, the mellotron, the use of the violins and viola and the sax. I know that Fripp also played the mellotron and he is known for his Frippertronics. I don't really know what the Frippertronics are though so I am not sure what he is or is not doing musically on the album. I really need to see a live KC video to check him out. |
Really surprising because there are tracks that are simply unbelievable , his acoustic work on early KC albums is tremendous but electric stuff on Sailor's Tale, 21st Century, all of Larks Tongues, Starless and Red are all mind-blowing. His solo on Eno's Baby's on Fire and Bowie's Heroes are original and searing. Forget the Frippertronics, just his various tones ,passionate intricacy and modesty is above and beyond anything by anyone. He is no flashy player but when you hear him live , you will understand his immense contributions to modern guitar playing.

Uhm! I'd voted for Jan Akkerman from Focus... but out of that list, I stay with Bobby: the most balanced IMO. I've always found Zappa a bit overrated as a guitar player.
Holdsworth? Another safe choice. But puttin him among the guitarist listed would be like cheating: he's an accomplished jazz fusion guitar player. I think he has a huge advantage for that fact.
