My girldriend's favourite prog bands (not that I've exposed her to too many, yet) are Porcupine Tree and Magma (hint: see sig Wink

It depends on the girl. We have various females at PA, and they have disparate tastes. Some are into Krautrock, RIO/Avant, Zeuhl, Heavy Prog, you name it.

As for my girl (six years old), she actually asks for me to put on Magma, but, then, she also asks for Mellow Candle, so....

As for Collin's fronted Genesis (the Collins' era), only the early albums are really Prog era, I think. I haven't noticed girls/women at PA extolling their love for Collins. I have for Christian Vander and others.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

It would only count if they liked Collins' Prog era Genesis, though (or the Prog side of Collins' fronted Genesis).

So far, of the things I've exposed my girlfriend to listen, she has enjoyed Genesis (both eras), Dream Theater and Muse the most. It seems very difficult that she will get into Opeth ever

(because of the growling, you know...).

Well lets see what my mom likes.... PF, Tool, and Radiohead. She can't stand Dream Theater because she thinks they're a glam metal band (she even said they sounded like one in BCaSL).

A better title for this thread would be 'why do guys who get into prog-rock find women to be such a mystery'.
I seriously doubt that there is a 'brand' of prog-rock 'made for a woman' (ie like deoderants etc) just as there is not a brand of prog rock made for the guys.

I guess the other question would be 'why do threads like this tend to show up on prog rock sites?'

For grunge it would be easier for me though. It seems like a common pattern that of the girls I know, they mostly like Stone Temple Pilots and Silverchair the most. Don't ask me why. I don't have a clue.

It's because male prog rock rock fans tend to be clueless when it comes to women and are looking for answers which they can't find in real life -- especially the socially inept ones (and let's face it, such communities attract the socially inept/ inexperienced) that spend their time on message boards rather than out there in the "real world".

I'm far from socially inept, and I can say that there are lots of girls/women out there who like a few prog bands (without even knowing what prog is). Most of them only like 3-5 prog bands, though. However, one or two of my female friends do like prog in general. One of my friends is really into prog metal and likes Dream Theater, Tool, Shadow Gallery, Psychotic Waltz, Symphony X, and more. Another one I know is into the older stuff like PF, Yes, Genesis, and even VdGG (which I introduced her to). Speaking of which, maybe I should introduce her to Magma.
