I'm more of a person with a diverse taste, so I'd stick with "the rest".

Same here. Frankly I'm surprised this is even a close contest, considering how many great bands/artists there are out there.

Tull, Crimson, Camel, Yes and Floyd for me. The rest are very close and could not live without them, but these five are the real deal.

Yes.. this poll turned out to be exciting, I myself didn't really no what would happen. When thinking about it, and looking at my 'holy section' of my record collection.. it does feel strange leaving it behind.

My 5 favorite bands:

Genesis
Yes
Rush
Opeth
Dream Theater

I would certainly miss out on these guys but I think I'd vote for the rest. Now, would this include my current collection or could it also include further additions to it?

My top five
ELP
IQ
Rush
Yes
Genesis

versus
Porcupine Tree
Tangerine Dream
Eloy
Kayak
Muse
Radiohead
Mansun
Par Lindh Project
Iron Maiden
Focus
Magenta
Glass Hammer
King Crimson
Jethro Tull
Spocks Beard
etc

truly horrible question!!

The only way I could pick my top five over the rest is to switch PT with Yes. That would give me a more balanced top five and I might be happy with just that, but then it wouldn't honestly be my top five favourite bands anymore. So I have to vote for ''the rest''. Par Lindh and Glass Hammer gives me a good hit of symphonic prog while there is plenty of neo prog out there to choose. The biggest miss for me would be Genesis who are completely unique.

I don't see how anyone can vote for top five to be honest. No matter how diverse or large the discography of your top five artists, there will be a comparatively infinite amount of other music out there! It just seems crazy to me! Heck, I wouldn't do it if it was Top 20!

EDIT: Well, actually, it depends on the theoretical consequences of this vote... does the rest of our collection just disappear, or does it mean we can never listen to music outside our top five ever again? So could we not just vote "The Rest" then re-buy the top 5?

I'm putting too much thought into this... Smile

Hmmm... my top five artists would most likely be:

The Residents
Zappa
Robyn Hitchcock
XTC
and
and
and
shoot, would that be King Crimson, Richard Thompson, maybe Porcupine Tree, The Beatles?  Drat, I don't know.

If I chose to rid myself of the five and went with the rest, can I assume that in the "rest" there are compilations and box sets and such things that just might include a song or two by the sacred five?
The damage that we do is just so powerfully strong we call it love

The damage that we do just goes on and on and on but not long enough.

Oddly enough I don't actually have five favorite bands because I've got so much good stuff in my collection now.  Terms like 'favorite" and "best" lose any meaning.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Camel, IQ, Mostly Autumn, Genesis and Horslips.

And I would say they made most of my favourite music between them.

-The Who
-Modest Mouse
-Black Sabbath
-The Kinks
-King Crimson

I think I gotta go with those. I dunno what use listening to music would be if I didn't have them along for the ride.

I just can't be limited to 5 artists, even if they are my favorites.  I'd make do and have new favorites.

Quantity-wise, my collection would square off against the combined heft of:

Zappa
Crimson
Davis
Prince
Bowie

That basically covers anything and everything anyone would ever want to listen to.

sorta like how '69-'89 covers anything and everything anyone would ever want to listen to? Wink

vote for everything else. I think i could do a favorite albums list but a favorite artist list is a different story.
Ask me to pick my top 10-15 albums against everything else and THEN you might get a different answer.

1989 should be the last stop for anyone who truly cares about the art form once known as music. Anything after that is an absolute insult to the masterpieces of the Golden Age. And really, who said anything about 69?
