PLEASE GO TO JAN SHUFFLE! THANKS!

If you are a digital freak like me, you have your music in your portable hard drive or main drive etc Or have a 200+ cd changer Or throw your vinyl in the air and see how they land.

1. Shove it all into whatever media player you have and hit shuffle.

2. list the artist, song title, length, album, short description and your personal review of that song. Yr. too. I failed to enter that on mine. I will in future shuffles.

3. No cheating! Whatever comes up you must list, even if it is from Mary Poppins! Excuse list after.

Here’s my shuffle from 12/15-16/110

1. Shadow Gallery -Act II: Christmas Day-5:41 from Tyranny. What a lucky start (sad passing of lead singer) Wow! Piano and vocals then hellacious guitar! 4.2

2. Paul McCartney Movement II-School 2:10 from Liverpool Oratorio. POC . 1TH Bad male opera? 1.0

3. Sylvan - Today 3:09 X-Rayed album. 1TH. Nice vocal track

4. Streisand, Barbra & Barry Gibb - Guilty 4:28 Duets album. Yes I’m a prog head that very much appreciates the Bee Gees vocals & Nobody has the type of voice that babs had. 3.7

4. London Symphony Orch. doing Frank Zappa’s - Pedro’s Dowry 10:25 1TH precision insanity abound

5. APP - Beyond the Pleasure Principle 3:14 Freudiana. A very solid APP album, very lengthy. Full sound  sax,   instrumental. 3.7

6. Spock’s Beard - Snow’s Night Out 2:04 Snow. Lots going on here at a tremendous rate!! 4.6

7. Flower Kings - Humanizzimo - 23:10 Meet the Flower Kings IMO they are the closest thing to Genesis today. 1TH. 17m guitar. Oh wow. 4+ on 1st listen.

8. Tool - Viginti Trees 5:13 10,000 days. 1TH lost me at the DRUG store.

9. Neal Morse - Nowhere Fast- 3:45 -Neal Morse- LMAO great lyric story of guy chasing girl that hates him. 3.9

10. Genesis - Abacab - 8:54 -1986 Live in Los Angeles. Best part of this song is when Collins shuts up and goes to join Chester. 1st half - 2.7 2nd half - 4.1

11. Loreena McKennit - Prospero’s Speech 3:23 The Mask and the Mirror. If u haven’t heard her b4, buy anything you can. Beautiful vocals. 1TH 4.2

12. Ain Soph - Marine Menagerie 10:44 - Marine Menagerie. simply put 4.5

13. Strawbs - Thank You 2:16 Bursting at the Seems (Bonus) kids singing, not typical of Strawbs. UR

14. Vangelis - Polonaise 5:25 Chronicles. I can’t rate any good Jon Anderson vocal below a 4. Nor will I here. 4

15. Jethro Tull - Bouree 6:06. A Little Light Music (live). This speaks for itself. 4.7

16. Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the Band 4:17. The Innocent Age. A tribute song to his father. Listen to his song “Ghosts”. 4.4

17. Beatles - Chains 2:25. Please, Please Me. Not my cup of tea. 2.5

18. Genesis - Build Me A Mountain (rough mix) 3:14. Archives 1 d4. An Ant song which was released as “Where the Sour Turns to Sweet. 3.6

19. Carly Simon - Hold on Your Heart 3:29. This Kind of Love. I’ve always wanted to climb up her legs. 1TH 3.1

20. Marillion - Marbles IV 1:26 - Marbles disc 2. Not the best song from Marbles for sure. 2.9

21. Flower Kings - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 9:20. Alive on Planet Earth. Not flawless/some improv 3 min of applause. 3.0

22. Unknown to me - Comfortably Numb 8:02. Wall live in Berlin. (must update this file) 3.4

23. Gabriel - In Your Eyes 5:29. So. I love the word facade. 4.1

24. Carpenters - It’s a Dirty Old Shame 3:49. Hits. This one though Karen’s vocals good as usual is TOO poppy! I’d have fed her. 2.2

25. Pendragon - Comatose (I. View from the shore) 7:41. Pure. I find Pendragon to be a Fish wannabe. Which is OK by me. They still have great instrumentals and vocals (sorta like Magenta in copying others music, again ok to a point). This is all by itself here. Very hvy for even PenD, many changes, subtle, ending with strings flows into next pt. 1TH UR

I must say that I got VERY lucky with my shuffle. At present I shuffled 31, 462 songs totaling 1,304 hrs. I know I still have some dupes in there, finding them is tedious. I can’t wait to see my fellow proggers lists!

EXCUSES. ETC.

1TH- 1st time hearing this song. rate or don’t rate.

POC- part of collection.

DS - Deleting soon.

UR - Un Ratable due to length, unfamiliar with song etc.

IDKWTF - self explanatory.

PA is very much “album” orientated. I’d like to be able to see others collections and rating of individual songs, maybe find a hidden gem or two. Besides, if you are like me, you have gathered an ample amount of music you still haven’t heard it all! Depending on interest, I will post a new shuffle 25 every 2 months. Merry Christmas Ya’ll!

I actually just plopped everything my media player (10 min) then opened a blank spread sheet. made a list 1-25 then enjoyed the music and just entered whatever came up. It was very enjoyable to me, not knowing what could come up next. I hope you change your mind, it's just another way to listen to your stuff.  Also, I would like any critiques anyone has upon my reviews of those songs in my shuffle.

PD: i see a lot of classic and symphonic prog in your list, but few songs from other genres. Have you tried newer, heavier or other kinds?

Agalloch. I see you like them, never heard before. What type of music? I'd argue your rating of Dogs. My absolute fav on Animals. Yes, I have newer stuff, All DT. Transatlantic, Morse, Porcupine Tree, Mostly Autumn, Magenta. Symphonic Prog to me is the best. I love the occassional strings that enhance it. PS I whole heartedly agree with you 5/5 of Octavarium.

I'm doing this in school during a lesson, so my chances of listening to the tracks aren't that good. My Ipod has tons of stuff I'm not very familiar with yet, which becomes painfully apparent it seems. And I'm not going to look up the years.

1. Amon Düül II - She Came Through the Chimney (Yeti) -  x/5 - I'm not very familiar with this track and I can't listen to it properly right now.
2. Faust - I've Got My Car and My TV (Faust So Far) - x/5 - Getting a bunch of Kraut a while back backfires, I haven't listened to this one at all yet.
3. Pink Floyd - Pigs on the Wing 1 (Animals) - 4/5 - An excellent intro to an excellent album.
4. R.E.M. - Orange Crush (Green) - 4/5 - One of my least favourite albums by them, but this is one of the better tracks.
5. Renaissance - Carpet of the Sun (Ashes Are Burning) - x/5 - Gah, I listened to this once a year ago, can't say a thing.
6. Soft Machine - Moon in June (Third) - x/5 - Heh. Now this one I've listened to several times, but only on the last listen a week or two ago I started to get a slight grip of it. Who knows, might be 5/5 in the future.
7. Harmonium - En Pleine Face (Si on avait etc) - 5/5 - A lovely track from a superb album. Brilliant.
8. King Crimson - The Letters (Ladies of the Road) - 4/5 - Live Crimso is always a treat, even if this is one of the lesser tracks from the album.
9. Genesis - Can-utility and the Coastliners (Foxtrot) - 3/5 - Not a big fan of this era of Genesis, but this is a good, solid track.
10. Neil Young - Mansion on the Hill (Ragged Glory) - 3/5 - One of the least good tracks on a great album.
11. Between the Buried and Me - Prequel to the Sequel (Colors) - x/5 - This album has gotten very little time from me so far, I always end up spinning The Great Misdirect when I feel like listening to them.
12. Led Zeppelin - Thank You (II) - x/5 - To be perfectly honest I can't remember this track at all. I usually listen to Zep only from III onward.
13. Testament - Musical Death (a Dirge) (The New Order) - 3/5 - A good instrumental from a good, though poorly produced album.
14. Nirvana - You Know You're Right (Nirvana) - 5/5 - I'll never stop cursing the fact that the last song they ever recorded was one of their very best. I'd have loved to see where they'd go next. Somewhere different I'm sure.
15. King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (Epitaph vol 2) - 4/5 - As I said, live Crimso is always a treat. This time a better song but worse sound.
16. Pekka Pohjola - Flight of the Angel (Flight of the Angel) - 4/5 - An excellent track from one of his weakest albums.
17. Isis - Hall of the Dead (Wavering Radiant) - 5/5 - I just listened to this album on my way to school, damn brilliant.
18. Manogurgeil - Poliisien kesäkoti (Unirytmejä) - 5/5 - A fantastic light-hearted camelish track, clearly the best of the album.
19. Black Sabbath - Supertzar (Sabotage) - 4/5 - One of the lesser tracks on a rock solid classic album.
20. Anvil - Stop Me (Metal on Metal) - 2/5 - A decent sleaze rock ballad on a pioneering metal album, not very representative of their style. Not good, not that bad.
21. Rasmus - Julen Är Här Igen (Peep) - 4/5 - A solid track on a great debut album by this funk rock band that later turned to radio pop rock.
22. Jethro Tull - Baker Street Muse (Minstrel in the Gallery) - 4/5 - Needs more attention by me, but so far I've found this track very very enjoyable.
23. Bon Iver - The Wolves (Act I and II) (For Emma, Forever Ago) - 4/5 - Everything on this album has felt really really good, but I still need to listen more.
24. Triptykon - Goetia (Eparistera Daimones) - 4/5 - Can't say for sure as I haven't been able to listen to this one so much yet. Immensely dark stuff, makes me a bit uneasy actually, but in the right mood better than most.
25. Neil Young - The Old Laughing Lady (Neil Young) - 3/5 - A good track from a good solo debut.

Keiser, Wow, alot of stuff here I've never even heard OF. I recognize the Tangerine Dream, The Tom Waits and the Clash. I guess this was my purpose. I want to find all the really good stuff. I am going to start looking for this stuff that you and others take pride in such as "Burial" and "Nue"

Pekka, You also seem to have had a very fine shuffle, I disagree with your Can-Utility rating, unfortunately you can only  get the appreciation of a severe bass note in that song off of vinyl, the cd doesn't cut it. O've heard of Amon and Faust but haven't heard much. Love Harmonium as well. 2nd time I've seen Isis (besides in Caligula lol). P.S. Put on Monstrel in the Gallery, relax and enjoy.

tamijo, would love to see atleast your ratings. Love Telegraph Road and Sad Lisa! What an outstanding Cat Stevens tune. As of yet unfortunately I do not have any Squire albums. Nice mix you had.

Sleepwalker, creepy folky a 5/5? Can't wait to find it! Ya know, Lady Fantasy floored me at first listen, I keep taking away points everytime I hear the "fade out" at the end. Though I do like the song in whole.  We both came up with Mediocre Comf Numb! Lol. Will also try out your Stooges! Thanks for the run down!

This is my 25 random tracks, with a small review :

1 (4) Quicksilver Messenger Service – Mona :

This is California late 60’s in a nut. Nice !, grows old well.

2 (2) Yugen – Skellotron 003

I Like Yugen, but this is just a piece of sound inbetween tracks, nothing special

3 (5) Kate Bush – The Saxophone Song

Bush at her best, from the outstanding debut.

4 (1,5) Choking Victim – In Hell

American Hardcore/Punk/Ska, the particular track, a bit overstressed.

5 (4) Supertramp – School

Supertramp dosent hit me, as they did back then, its one of their better songs though.

6 (3) No-Man– Born Simple

From flowermix CD version. Its an ongoing heartbeat rythm, with ambient soundscrablings on top (Wilson/Fripp). Not a favorite No-man track, not a favorite ambient track either, but its ok.

7 (4,5) Pink Floyd – San Tropez

Lovely, soft and very relaxed, good old floyd, what can you say.

8 (5 ) Genesis – The Chamber of 32 Doors

Wow, hit one of my all time favorites, Genesis at the absolute top. From the amasing Lamb.

This deserves 6 stars, what a story too.

9 (2,5) Sparks – How Are You Getting Home?

Funny nostalgy, but it is, as with most Sparks, more fun than actualy great music.

10 (2,5) Electric Light Orchestra – Alright

Straight forward rock, old style. Dooes sound a bit outdated

11 (5) Frank Zappa – Inca Roads

A Zappa masterpiece, from The Lost Episodes (1996), beauti’ sounds very Gentle Gain’ish

12 (3,5) Slipknot – Gematria (The Killing Name)

Very powerfull track, i like the energy. A headbanger !

13 (4) The Cure – Three

Allways had a weak spot for those early Cure tracks. So simple – so dry.

14 (5) Pink Floyd – Fearless

Meddle again, says a lot about statistics, considering the huge amount of tracks to pick from.

Anyway this is a true masterpiece, and a nostalgi tripp too, Wonderfull. I can allmost smell the incense (or what it is).

15 (3,5) King Crimson – Improv: Cerberus (live in Central park)

From all the Improv’s, from this period, realeased on “Live Crimson” albums. This does not stand out as one of the best. But on the other hand, i allways get great pleasure from listning to them live.

Bruford as allways a beast.

16 (4,5) Pink Floyd – Remember a Day

I dont listen too A Saucerful of Secrets that often, when in the mood for early Floyd, i tend to end  up with Piper at the Gates. But this is a very strong early Floyd track. Did somebody say Mushroom.?

17 (3) Grand Funk Railroad – Feelin' Alright

Fine, feel good rock music, when in the mood. But not right now.

18 (4) Joan Armatrading – The Weakness In Me

What a vocal, great Armatrading song.

19 (3,5) Whitesnake – Still of the Night

Classic Heavy, Coverdale at his best. Just never up there with Zepplin, Purple or Sabbath.

Maby it needs some uglyness ?

20 (2) David Bowie – I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spaceship

Bowie trying to do something very modern, but not making it. Gives me next to nothing.

21 (?) Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina – Canticum Canticorum - Vox dilecti mei

Classical vocal music, i like it, but im just not qualified to rate this kind of music.

22 (3) David Byrne – Something Ain't Right

Byrne is allways bringing forward a smile on my lips, he sends so much humour and energi.

This is not one of his best songs, but its not bad either.

23 (?) Giuseppe Verdi – Otello, Act3: A terra! ...si... nel livido fango (Desdemona)

Opera, i still dont actualy get it, even though i sometimes like listning to a bit of it.

So again im not qualified to try rate.

24 (2) Bad Religion – Come Join Us

Bad religion plays a kind of soft melodic punk, i could live without.

25 (4) Pain of Salvation – Void Of Her

Pain is one of the bands i discovered quite resently, still growing on me.

I dont really like Verdi. If you want some killer opera thats more than enjoyable check out any of Puccini's as well as one by Pietro Mascagni called Cavalleria Rusticana. These are all pretty mainstream operas so they'll be easy to find but they're the first opera's that clicked with me. worth a shot.
