If somebody has never heard them, here are some samples and you can vote according to those:

i was actually talking about to my friend about them the other night. When i want funk, i almost always turn to Parliament. Funkadelic has more rock than Parliament does, but i never think to put them on. I also feel Parliament is more consistent. On the flip side, i am more familiar with Parliament than i am Funkadelic, so that may affect my bias.

I choose Parliament

Faves:

Parliament - Funkentelechy Vs. The Placebo Syndrom (i also really like Chocolate City and Mothership Connection)

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain ( the only other one i know of is One Nation Under A Groove)

Parliament were more popular but Funkadelic were better. My favourite Funkadelic album is Maggot Brain, although I will give special mentions to Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follw and Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On.

^^  I agree that Funkadelic are by far more rock headed, with the presence of Eddie Hazel, for me they are like the Hendrix's funk continuation.

Parliament seem way more groovier and humoursitic, but I'm the other way round. I have more Funkadelic albums than Parliament, so maybe I'm biased the other way round.

I love Mothership Connection, that I would call space-funk, but not because it's psychedelic, but it's like a funk trip to space, but that's already explicit at the beginning of the album.
But Funkadelic has more diversity, from the psychedelic grooviness of the first records to the more rockin funk of later era, it's just all pretty awesome.

Funny, I worked with a guy named Eddie Hazel.  Really.  Not the same one.  I actually prefer Parliament, by one of Sir Noise D'Voidoffunk's nosehairs.
Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

I like both, particularly Maggot brain by Funkadelic and Osmium by Parliament, but I\m going with Parliament for Osmium.  I really dig it.

Funkadelic's 'Free your mind' and 'maggot brain' are essential. The other albums are less essential. I believe Parliament were pre-Funkadelic (The Parliaments) but what I know from them is post-Funkadelic and is more disco funk oriented.

My understanding is that The Parliaments started in the late 50s, there was a dispute about the name so Clinton laterstarted Funkadelic, and then quickly created a consecutive band Parliament.  Both Funkadelic's and Parliament's first album were released in 1970, but I'm quite sure the Funkadelic album came out first.  Osmium is the first album released as Parliament, and i think it's a great album.  It's more like Funkadelic than Parliament, and I'm not sure why it wasn't released as Funkadelic.  Later on Parliamant distinguished itself from the more rock Funkadelic (haven't heard Parliement''s second album which was released four years after the first).

Good as Maggot Brainand Free Your Mind are, Osmium is my particular fave (been a while since I heard Funkadelic's first).

^today I listened to Funkadelic's debut coincidentally. It's psychedelic alright, reminding me a lot to Hendrix slightly groovier and less focused sometimes. It's a decent record, but Maggot Brain is by far better.

I remember liking the debut, but not being as impressed with it as albums such as Maggot Brain, or Parliament"s debut from the same year (1970).

Just another track for now from Osmium for those that do not know it:

I was rather alienated in my view before that Funkadelic (and Parliament) does have Prog Related merits when it was suggested a couple of years ago, but I shouldn't get into that debate again.

Based on what I know by the two (admittedly, not as much as I'd like to), I prefer Parliament.
